Sounds a lot like the Pakis have experience hunting in snake country where you go in stomping your feet so the snakes will pick up the vibrations, not be surprised, and have the opportunity to slither away before you encounter any of them - unless they're asleep while sunning themselves. And then - after you've left their area - they just move back in.
