No, of course they don't see it. Consider the rate of functional illiteracy. Reflect on the ability of people to understand compound interest. View a network news report. The American population is more interested in how Princess Diana died a decade ago than they are in the details of politics.
How is Obama presented? Young, articulate, innovative - which are all good by definition in our present culture. He is also presented as a non-threatening black. This appeals to those who will support a black candidate as proof, both to themselves and others, that they are not racist.
But I think Obama's real purpose is to create a false sense of drama. He is not unlike the distraction a magician uses to divert our attention from something else - in this case, Hillary's advance.
