I spent 9 months in Iskandariya back in 2005. I can recall swimmers, and small boats being fairly common, the other side of the river was Indian country at the time. IDF and IEDs were daily, but from what I hear now its down to 2-3 IEDs a week, very little IDF and SA fire is down to nearly nothing. The run down Route 8 used to have at least a 50/50 shot at getting ambushed, probably a lot higher for those running high profile.
