There is a concept called the “greedy algorithm” – in computer programming, this means that the lowest cost or highest value step is always selected without regard to future consequences. In our society, we seem to function the same way. With corporations, the next quarter’s earnings are critical – even though the company may be heading towards long-term oblivion. We have a desire for immediate gratification, a desire to avoid costs. In many instances, personal gratification supersedes the needs of the group – whether that group refers to the nation, or some lesser assemblage.

We tend to lack any conviction with regard to our moral compass. Saying that something is morally right – or wrong – does not make one popular. Indeed, it is interesting to see the MSM scrutinize and attempt to destroy any public figure making such statements.

There are, of course, numerous exceptions to the above, all duly noted.

However, the trends in our society suggest we would embrace Neville Chamberlain today. The cost for appeasement in the past was dear; it may be beyond our capacity to pay this time.
