Turkey would pay a huge political price, however. It would lose all chance of joining the European Union.

Albeit admittedly limited, I feel that I have some handle on the Sunni / Shia, Persian / Arab tensions that exist in this particular part of the world. But I am weak on my education concerning Turkey. I am attempting many methods to remedy this weakness and one of them is by asking of the professionals here.
So, with that being said, I am interested in knowing what you guys think of the quoted situation above. In the hypothesized scenario, what proves more important (or, at least, more powerful to those with authority) in Turkey: taking care of any hostility with Kurdish northern Iraq despite global reaction or ultimate acceptance into the European Union?
I am greatly interested in your opinions. I appreciate your time – thank you.
