I'm going to take a stab and assume that the 168 grain is a comprimise from lighter to heavier yet still achieving an acceptable level of sound reduction and effective range. Since my experience with suppressors is largely with pistol calibers, I will only load sub-sonic bullets for suppressed shooting. However, I am seeking the most quite sound signature possible, not necessarily concerned with what happens to the bullet in flight or that my max effective range may be dampened by the use of a suppressor. After all, pistols are only used at 25-50 meters, if that.
Last time we shot subsonic through a 7.62 SureFire can, you could hear the sear break and the firing pin strike. If you want to get true sound comparisons, you are going to need to shoot on a flat range, with no overhead or side berms.

If you have the ability to do so safely, you can get a very effective comparison from behind downrange berms as the weapon is fired by the side or overhead, but proper coordination for safety is paramount.
