The "candy stripers", my now ex-father in law's nicer discription, were a shock to me when I first arrived at Ft. Bragg in 83. Ok, to be exact the pregnant female wearing the green beret was. It is my understanding that the tab was created because of support soldiers authorized to wear the headgear of their parent unit. Since prior to this (candy stripers) only qualified SF wore the green beret.

Is this myth or one of the reasons for the Special Forces tab?
