I thought the idea of a government was supposed to represent the people. People like this do nothing but drive further divisions among Americans.

Making a cartoon ad with flashpoints like:

Gays are evil and destroying the American way of life
Flag burning is destroying the American way of life
Abortion is murder and destroying the American way of life
Jesse Jackson has been arrested at some point
That the idea of god belongs in every school

Is not serving any of my interests in regards to what I want a government to do. Which is mainly protect me and stay the hell out of my personal life.

Seriously. I am a lot more worried about nuclear and biological terrorism than I am gay marriage. If people want to get married, it's none of my business.

I don't burn flags and I don't think it's a very mature way to present anger, but in a free country people have that right.

Abortion is really no one's business but the people involved.

Many social rights crusaders like Ghandi, Malcom X and Martin Luther King were all put in jail at some point or another. Doesn't make them criminals.

As for god in schools, we have freedom of religion. In my home, we're not raising our child religious. Do I care if she says one nation under god? Not at all. But I know people who do care about that, pro and con. That's their right to be upset about it and it's their civic responsibility to voice that if they feel strongly enough because democracy is participatory and not exclusionary.

At the end of the day there is a separation between church and state but it is historical text and I believe it should be preserved as is.

This ad campaign is just another smear piece that looks like it came off of Jerry Springer. What about bringing our country back together? What about offering some solutions instead of waving flags and talking about the good old days. This reeks of the same fundamentalist crap that Mullah's sell the jihadi's in Iraq.

America is godless and destroying Iraq

They will slaughter our children for oil

Etc. etc. And surprise, surprise...those folks don't have a plan to fix their country either.

If anything, this kind of crap makes me long for the days of statesmen like Lincoln, FDR or JFK.
