Sounds a bit like the author of posts I've read on the militarydotcom forums. Known there as AuxArmes & wrote very 'gripping' & entertaining and educational accounts of his time with SF. The only problem is, if it's the same person, he seems to have a habit of getting himself banned from most military oriented sites.

If you're interested you can take a look at his profile on the aforementioned site to see if any of the info rings a bell. It's quite detailed.
