Hollis, That's good stuff for the correct types of line and handy kit to keep around. I'm not much good with soft rope, it splices different from wire rope and I always get confused.
The "molly" is a fast down and dirty way to put an eye in the end of a wire rope but it won't stand up to wear and running thru shivs or around drums like a properly spliced eye. I've helped long splice one and three eights inch mainline and have watched even bigger wire rope get spliced where it took a rigging chain and a D-7 Cat to suck the "strands' in tight.
We used some marlin spikes thirty inches long but usually about one and two footers would do.
A good question remains, anyone know the source of the name "Molly Hogan"?
