Mythbusters actually tested this myth and found that the circumstances are actually plausable. This doesn't validate the event itself, just the fact that it is physically possible.
Some of the canisters merely burst at the seams, but there were several that exploded rather dramatically and sprayed the car with biscuit dough in a manner consistent with the story.
