Hello Folks I know I have been away for awhile but I am back. I am in the market for a 4 seaon tent and Iknow that all the geeks here I could find an expert. So who makes the best 4 season tent today. And don't say the Chinese...LOl...........

4 season, what seasons, where, and 1 person or a 20 persons tent????

There are Mountain tents for the alpine environment, But none will hold up to what a Igloo will. In Guam a 4 season tent is a hamock.

I have a real nice tent, I used it snow camping at Creater Lake in January. It has two vestibules and is roomy for two people, three if you dump gear outside. You might check out REI, Mountain Gear in Spokane, or?

Here I am outdated again. :D Ponchos always worked. You'd be surprised at what two people can contrive. :p

I've replaced the ponchos with those blue tarps that cost about $2.00 for an 8X4 at Discount Stores like Walmart. I pack them in my ATV's for survival use only. They come equipped with grommets that make them easier to string up than the poncho.

I prefer accomodation with a minibar and Sat TV

QRQ you are not the only one dating yourself, I only want know what the hell happen to the poncho, worked everywhere I went , in all seasons.

I held back to see what the other folks would answer. Just get a chainsaw and fall a limby tree across a draw. Fill in with brush as needed.

Good Idea but it Sucked.
 

At the beginning of the VN war, they devised a shelter that would keep tou off of the ground and protected from skeeters -- the jungle hammock. Like I say, it was a good idea,\.

We set up on a place called Frijoles Island in Gatun Lake in Panama. The Panamanian Air Force (mosquitos) were fierce in the jungle and seemed to be having a convention on Frijoles Is. They were so thick at night that if you let your arm rest against the mosquito net, you would wake up with tracks following all of your veins. These skeeters were well versed in the vascular system of humans.

When you got into your hammock, you had to be extremely quick, as the skeeters would join you on the inside and had no where to go except at your blood.

Now see if you can envisikon this. I set up my hammock and decided to be extremely fast in entering. I quickly unfastened one side and quickyl jumped in -- and out the other side, completely destroying the thing. The rest of the team got a big kick out of that and the skeeters gorged themselves on my blood all night. :(

I know about those skeeters when they come in dark grey couds and couldn't imagine having to sleep in the open making blood donations all night long.

That's the second part of my "chainsaw camp" plan, run the fuel/oil mix a little rich on the oil and stand in the saw's exhaust, no skeeters there.
Learned that working here in the "hills" of Oregon.

The downside is that might be a breach of noise discipline...

I just use a thermal mat if it's a clear night. Carry a hoochie with me in case it rains though. Nice and light and folds up small.

The hoochie is one of the best pieces of kit, ever.

Tried to no avail to get a US manufacturer to make them out of modern materials.

JHB, Eureka makes some good tents, but if you really need 4-season, you're going to pay for it. You might also try the Kifaru hunting forums to get some information on guys that use tents year-round.

QRQ, FYI, we are still using just ponchos on this end. Ground cloth with a poncho liner or a quick hootch when it rains. I had a British "basha" that I traded a US poncho for in Belize, but it wore out over the years. I need to replace it. "Tents, we don't need no stinking tents"
