We were at one of our afghani checkpoints, and we were having them shoot some of there weapons. well one soldier wanted to shoot the 75mm recoiless rifle from his shoulder, and we were like....sure. well the video is what happened.

y'know, recoiless doesn't translate all that well...

Looks like he forgot to flip the switch to the "Recoilless" setting.

What was wrong with the RCL? I've been told when they wore out they started recoiling forward?

How badly injured was the shooter? S/F.....Ken M

Hey had some facial bruising, and knocked out a couple of his teeth. We sent him to the hospital, and he was back ready for duty the next day.

The recoiless rifle....When I was in DLI for Thai, the instructors discovered that I could NOT say that word (in Thai). They would twist every conversation with me so I had to say it....I just know it was so they could laugh at the different things that came out of my mouth. BTW, the literal translation of recoiless rifle from Thai is "the rifle that lacks the power to bounce backwards".

All I get is the sound no video

Okay, my interest is piqued. Google tells me that the weapon is "recoilless" because it uses a perforated artillery cartridge and vented chamber which, in concert, allow some of the gases to be directed in the opposite direction from the point of aim, thus diminishing free recoil.

Is that the right idea? Also, doesn't that imply that a recoilless round is relatively low velocity? What is the advantage over a small, fin-stabilized rocket?

I guess you should not believe everything you hear..... ;)

I moved the thread here.

Not only is it funny but there is a weapons teaching point involved.

I've fired a number of recoiless rifles and none of them ever bit me.

Thanks Max, I've not laughed that hard in a while.

Max,
Do you have any objections to me placing it on our entertainment server here at Kandahar? Priceless.... thank you for sharing.

Recoilless Rifle Adjustment?

It's been about 23 years since I had my hands on a recoilless rifle of any type. IIRC some types had an adjusting plate(s) in the breach area for adjustment of back blast/recoil. Was the 57mm one of them?
