The British-based suicide bomber who attacked coalition forces in Iraq was named in reports today as Idris Bazis.

The 41-year-old French national is believed to have taken part in a suicide bomb attack in Iraq in February.

February was one of the bloodiest months since the end of the war in Iraq, following the election of a new Government.

At least 60 coalition troops were among those killed in numerous attacks by insurgents.

Bazis’s former home in Moss Side, Manchester, was raided by armed police early yesterday morning and a 40-year-old man, of north African origin, was arrested under the Terrorism Act.

It is thought the man had lived at the red-brick terrace house on Great Southern Street with Bazis before the suspected bomber travelled to Iraq.

A police source described the former flatmates as “associates”.

The man arrested in yesterday’s 5am raid, led by the Greater Manchester Police anti-terror unit, was being questioned by detectives at a secret location today.

Searches of the house continued as police tried to establish how Bazis got to the Gulf and uncover his British support network.

Bazis still has family living in Britain, according to reports, and they have also been questioned by police.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “Officers are continuing to question a man arrested yesterday under the Terrorism Act.

“The man was arrested after officers carried out a search warrant under the Terrorism Act. The search at a house in Greater Southern Street is continuing today.

“The action was taken as it was believed that one of the previous residents of the house may have died during an attack against coalition forces in Iraq in February 2005.

“Officers are searching the address looking for documents related to his journey to Iraq or links to anyone else.”

Terrorists in networks like these could easily infilitrate into the US and attack us on our own soil. IMO, this is substantial proof we are taking the war to them.

cells like these attacked us in '93 and on 9/11...expand on your thesis...how did you determine that foreign nationals living in 'friendly' countries present a threat as a result of us taking the war to them...?

I wonder how many attacks (if any) have been redirected to Iraq as a direct result to the "call for jihad" there.

My logic is that a foreign national (from an allied country, like Britain for example) could more easily infiltrate into the US than someone of a more conspicuous origin (i.e. Syrian).

what is the advantage to attacking us in Iraq rather than the US...? are they less conspicuous? do they have a better established support network? give it some thought...perhaps it's the call for jihad...maybe it's just easier...expand on your thought train...

true...but riddle me this...why use Britain as a base to attack Americans involved with OIF...? why not use Syria, Jordan, why not use an in-theater safe zone? is the pressure we are exerting in Iraq causing mission planning to be directed outside theater? does this bode well or ill for our cause?????????????

IMO, it's better that they are consolidating their efforts in a war zone than have blood spilled by citizens of this country, especially women and children.

It's feeling a little better but I still can't do much with it.

I can do lots and lots of pushups with my left arm though. Some NCO this morning was leading our holdover PT and he laughed when I did the first set of pushups with only my left. He wasn't laughing when he was on his knees on the final sets and I was still pumping them out.
