Recalling the timing, at the time with my M-14 on Ord's beach ranges, I wonder now about something. I had no idea such a thing was even going on at the time. Was it really such a big thing right at the moment, or did it have to ferment for awhile? That sea of humanity wasn't even on my radar.

Speaking of Dive School....I highly recommend everyone watch 13 Lives on Amazon Prime. About the rescue of the soccer team in Thailand a few years ago.

I do remember a period in our history when you could walk by a barracks room in West Germany and get a contact high if you lingered too long. I valued my TS and always figured Jack Daniels is legal, so...

We heard about it in KW. As I remember the newspapers in NY were all over it because 1)the drug usage and 2)it tied the local road system in knots. Also, Remember Dick Nixon was POTUS.

Dr Tim Leary and his LSD groupies were pushing prime time by 69. After he was fired from Harvard in 63, he moved to the Hitchcock Estate in Millbroch, NY, just 20 minutes from my home.

The Beatles started using LSD in 65 so by the start of Woodstock the Hippi World was at full speed.

Remember LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) was legal until Oct 68

It's kinda funny. I graduated HS in 66 (105 grads) and I didn't know one kid using pot. By 69 very few were not using it. I tried it, but it was not my cup of tea, too many variables. I stayed with the beer-n-whisky crowd and learned to deal with hangovers :munchin

The Army in the '70's...

Potheads, Rednecks, and the "regulars"..or whatever.

Potheads, anywhere they could, rednecks, at the Rod & Gun, regular guys..hanging with whomever... There were"cross-overs" then also...drink and smoke...:eek:

This was my observation overseas, Ger, Italy...

Before my "time," but my dad was in the USAF at the time and a 1SG in the late 70's. Remember vividly him walking me around the barracks during the summers when I hung out with him and him pointing out MJ that was growing along the edge of the building after Airmen were chunking it out the window right before an unannounced inspection.

My first assignment was with the 101st in 1975 and I will never forget the constant MJ haze and smell that permeated the hallways right after PT every morning. As I was not a smoker I was labeled CID. It took a new CO and 1SG to clean house and when I left in March of 77 it was a much better place. Never saw any pot in Korea I guess the thought of languishing in a Korean prison was enough to quell the desire to smoke it.

Those $1.00 tabs of LSD must have been either really good or really bad. Always thought it was a little bizarre that Army helicopters showed up to save the day.

Not only did they provide dust-off for the people suffering bad trips, but they also brought food and water.
