Spotting scope
 

I'm looking for recommendations for a spotting scope, effective out to 300+ meters, under $ 500 or so. Thanks

Vortex has pretty good glass for the price. Check out a Diamondback. You can find them for under 500 bucks

Just ran a list of eb for USED, name brands, under 350USD, had 60 hits.
Used 350 as there are make-offer that will possibly get you to 300 OTD
Here is a scope that might fit your purpose.
The hi-lighted features are the one that I think make or break a good optic.
IF, you plan to hump to the hunting area, the weight may be a variable that is worth factoring, but if you're a bench shooter, not so much.

In seriousness, most of the optics I've used for spotting are higher end Leupold, Swarovski and S&B at 600+Y ranges. One of the less expensive pieces of glass another shooter brought to the range that impressed me for the price was

.223 discernable on a paper target out to about 500Y and .308 on steel to about 800Y were crystal clear. There is a slight amount of distortion around the edges of the image and on the highest magnification (60X). The biggest issue was that it is front heavy so you need a decent tripod. Eye relief might be an issue also as you almost have to put your eye on the glass to get a good pic and the variance is very low, if the wind moves the scope at all, you can get shading. On the plus side, clarity and brightness are outstanding for the price point (<$300).

TLDR: For target shooting or hunting at shorter ranges, it performed well for the price. I probably wouldn't take this into the field because it can take a bit of effort to get clear on the target.

My wife got me the Leupold Sx-1 Ventana 2 15-45x60 for my birthday based on the recommendation of Bill Wilson. It is a good one for the price.

I found out about this guy and ordered one. Seems like a better option than buying from the "big box stores". I got a Kowa from him and it works pretty good. Don't forget to get a solid stand for it, tripod or "E" wing setup. Flimsy stands will shake and move around and if that's happening it really won't matter how good the optics are.

I'll second jarheadtop.com. Jim Owens is pretty much a legend in hi-power competition circles. I'd also consider checking out the CMP E-Store; they sell a quality entry level spotting scope (https://estore.thecmp.org/Catalog/Item/832). Nothing wrong with any of the other suggestions; just remember, you get what you pay for and your price range puts you in the "I'll be passing this on to someone else sooner than I expected" range. Check out product reviews on https://www.accurateshooter.com/ and https://www.snipershide.com/. Any of the precision rifle series websites will also have some good data. My .02 cents, HTH.

That Condor looks intriguing; old one giving up ghost so might look at that & Jim Owens has a better price than many. Interestingly it appears to also have an inclinometer in it.
