Navy Admiral Assigned to Oversee Green Beret Homicide Case

Movement or smoke and mirrors?

THE PENTAGON — The Navy has ordered an admiral to oversee see disciplinary actions related to the death of an Army Special Forces soldier in Mali last year as an NCIS investigation is close to complete, USNI News has learned.

Rear Adm. Charles Rock, the commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, was appointed in late October to oversee cases related to the death of Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar, as the NCIS investigation was concluding.

While the CDA arrangement between the Marines and the Navy is “highly unusual,” the appointment of Rock indicates the Department of the Navy is likely set to take at least some of the cases to courts-martial, Bracknell said.

“If the case has been forwarded to a CDA, the D stands for ‘disposition’,” he said. “While no action and administrative action are dispositions, it seems like the services are gearing up for a more formal punishment process.”
Let’s hope this is the case!

Movement - hopefully in the right direction.

So I get the NCIS investigation getting handed off to a Navy flag officer but seems like there would be greater impartiality if it were another service or Joint Staff.... :munchin

I'd hope it would be impartial either way, but I'd think that if any "pressure" (real or perceived) to get it right, it would greatest on a regular USN officer. Navy screw up, Navy 100% owns the clean up. If the Admiral is not SOF then more better. IMO.

One thing I can say is that the USN has never been afraid to eat their own officers. I can only imagine how little thought is given to dropping the hammer on a member of the Enlisted class.

Well lets see what happens...I would say wait and see but we have waited long enough

History has demonstrated that the Navy will not stain the name of a recruiting tool.

My prognostication: This comes to nothing.

If the two involved wrote a tell all book of their heroism in the face of overwhelming odds and the sacrifices they had to make then yes, maybe, if the wrong redactions were made then yes, the Navy would prosecute them for violating their NDA.

Otherwise, I’m as skeptical as you.
