Red Platoon: A True Story of American Valor
by Medal of Honor Recipient SSG Clinton Romesha. On TR's mention in another thread I picked this up and he is right; it is a compelling read. The author has a good grasp of story-telling; when to flashback as background, or inject personal observations to lend personalities to his team's members. He can also move between brief philosophical discussions of the bonds that are formed to the 1st-person level of resolve in the battle with such eloquent waxings as "...take back our fucking house!" His candor in assessing his battle-mates as well as himself is "up there." Anyway, good read & if you're building that nightstand stack for the winter this should be on it.
Hat-tip TR. Link on Smile Amazon I also picked up The Warriors: Reflections on Men in Battle, by J. Glenn Gray, who Romesha quotes from a bit in his book. Uncracked yet, but the vinter ist lang kamerad & will get to it. |

The first time I had no idea who he was, we were just talking about his hunting trip down here in NZ when I noticed a bunch of people staring our way and it wasn’t me they were looking at. A great guy to share a beer with. |
