A Jim Wells County (Texas) Sheriff’s Office dog died after being left in his handler’s patrol unit for more than 20 hours, and its handler has been relieved of his duties, Sheriff Oscar Lopez said.

“We got (the cause) under investigation; we believe it was the heat,” Lopez said.

Dog handler Latham Roldan was initially placed on administrative leave Monday after the sheriff’s office was advised about an incident involving one of the office’s dogs named Jola, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

“The preliminary findings show that his K-9 partner, Jola, was left in the unit and consequently died,” the release stated.

On Tuesday, internal affairs investigators determined that Roldan left the dog in a patrol vehicle without proper care and she died.

“(The dog) was left in the vehicle for more than 20 hours,” Sheriff Oscar Lopez told the Caller-Times.

Because of policy violations, along with neglect for the care of the dog, Roldan was fired Tuesday, the release states.

The county attorney’s office will review the incident, Lopez said.

A separate internal affairs investigation also is being conducted, Lopez said.

If I was in charge he would pay the bill on the total cost of the dog including all training and development, as well as jail time.

Manslaughter - he just killed a police officer through negligence.

Well, that's at least what a non-police person would be charged with.

I've come to the point where I do not find the "Police vs Civilians" usage to be true.

To me the police are civilians as well.

He killed his partner.

Saw that a buddy of mine and his office use something called hot -n- pops on top of procedures to be certain this doesn't happen to their animals. I think their concern is a dog left in a running vehicle that malfunctions while the k-9 officer is otherwise occupied.

And, during those hours, he popped into my head every 20 or 30 minutes because he depends on me. And he's a pet, not a working police K-9 I'm paid to care for.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office sadly announces the passing of K-9 “Wix”. On Wednesday, August 12, 2015, K-9 Wix and his partner Deputy Lemberger were on special assignment at the PGA Championship in Kohler, Wisconsin. Deputy Lemberger and Wix, who specialized in explosive detection, were contracted to assist with site security.

Wix was placed in the squad car with the engine running and the air conditioning on. Deputy Lemberger conducted checks on Wix throughout the morning. At approximately 12:30pm, Deputy Lemberger found Wix non-responsive in the back of his squad car and the air conditioning unit was not functioning properly. Deputy Lemberger’s squad car is equipped with K9 heat alarm which did not activate when the air conditioning unit failed.

K-9 Wix was a 3 year old male Malinois. Wix has been a member of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office since April of 2014 and has been Deputy Lemberger’s partner the entire time. Wix was a dual purpose patrol dog trained in tracking and explosive detection. Wix was a valuable member of this agency and community and will be sadly missed by all. Our thoughts are with Deputy Lemberger while he copes with the loss of his K-9 partner.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into this incident. Bay East Animal Hospital is assisting with this investigation to determine the cause of death.

We will be conducting a brief press conference with Dr. Eastman from Bay East Animal Hospital at 3:45pm today, in the Truttmann Room of the Sheriff’s Office, 2684 Development Drive.

This was a case of relying on technology instead of human responsibility.

I'm calling bullshit. You don't leave a GSD, your partner, locked in a car for 20hrs. Period.

Fuck them. Go to jail and do time for manslaughter. If good enough for a citizen, then good enough for a cop. Period.

I'm really confused here. I thought Police were on 12 hour shifts, how was this dog left in the car for 20 hrs strait? :confused:
