Help, I’m Trapped in Facebook’s Absurd Pseudonym Purgatory

I know a BUNCH of people that do not use their given names for FB, for what ever reason. Most, I suspect, use pseudonyms for PERSEC/OPSEC..

The article says: "target people who often already are marginalized and vulnerable". I do not buy that categorization..

I see nothing wrong with using a FB feature that they make available to ALL FB users.

I altered mine, not for vanity, but because there are a bazillion JJ's out there..

But now FB is not happy that they have given this option to their users..

Problem is the way they are punishing users for using the option.

Some of you may want to rethink your FB membership,, Before someone rats you out... :munchin

Two weeks ago, Facebook locked me out of my profile. My photos and friends are gone, my profile vanished without a trace.

Someone reported my account as pseudonymous, and Facebook kicked me out. To get back in, I must provide various forms of identification proving the authenticity of my username. I’m not going to.

I am one of many casualties of Facebook’s recently rejiggered “authentic name” policy, wherein anonymous users can report a name as fake and trigger a verification process. Part of the motivation is stopping the proliferation of celebrity imposter accounts and profiles made for pets. But it’s also allowed Facebook to shutter the accounts of real people, based on “authenticity.” What does “authentic” mean, though? It’s both confusing and contextual, because identity itself is confusing and contextual.

Despite those complexities, Facebook believes it can determine authenticity for you.

Right now, the policy defines authentic as the name you “use in real life.” It’s a policy that has existed as long as Facebook has, though it’s (ironically) been fluidly defined over time. Aside from the complexity of identity, the policy is haphazardly enforced at best. At worst, it’s dangerous and discriminatory, and has demonstrably and repeatedly been used to target people who often already are marginalized and vulnerable.

It's extremely difficult for the Face Book corporate folks to take advantage/scam/rip you off if you and your FB "friends" don't use your real names.

Do yourselves a favor and take up the phone and even Skype to stay in touch with your real friends.......

Hmm

Hmm, all my critters still have their FB pages.

Seriously, there are lots of critter pages. One of my dogs has about 400 critter friends. Mostly dogs, followed by cats and then a really odd assortment of others.

A author friend of mine recently changed her FB name to the name of one of her characters, intending it to be a brief PR stunt. It backfired. FB won't let her change it back to her author name.

Stupid.

Have a similar problem w/FaceBook. Now they want all sorts of personal information - including a scan of a "government-issued ID". F@#* them! I'd prefer not to even use FaceBook. (Unfortunately, some of the sites I visit require that you login to FaceBook before you can even up-vote (or down-vote) a comment.

I guess I'll just have to forego commenting on comments...

This is why I don't put much effort into my Facebook account, beyond connecting with friends. I've already been banned once; it didn't hurt that badly, and the project was successful anyway.

Does that mean you're now identifying as a black dog with white spots?
