While I applaud General McAuliffe's professionalism and reported lack of profanity use compared to his peer group, this is one historical occasion where I think the use of some words that could make a drunk sailor blush would have been truly awesome and perfectly appropriate.

Profanity that echoes through military history thru eternity a bit like a modern day Molon Labe.

Even as a kid when reading about it I thought it was awesome, but just assumed it was Army PR watered down for Homefront.

I took Williamson Murray's History of WWII class at Ohio State many years ago and this was one of topics he touched on. Dr. Murray said McAuliffe's response was indeed watered down for the home front. It read something more like "Go f*ck yourself!"

Outstanding! Now what do we have to do to get the history books changed to reflect reality?

I like the quote from the surrounded Brits in "A Bridge Too Far" when asked by the Germans to surrender.

"We haven’t the proper facilities to take you all prisoner. We’d like to, but we simply cannot accept your surrender. Sorry."

Classic!
