Anyone here a member? They are a great conservative, patriotic, fraternal organization. I've been a member since 1991. My paternal grandmother ( Daughter of the American Revolution) insisted I consider joining. Very proud to have.

Do they have any connections to sources that might help one find out if their ancestors were participants in the Revolutionary War?

Never heard of it. My mom is in DAR and never mentioned it.

The have a research committee. Lot's of the ancestry has already been completed and it's a pretty streamlined process. It's not free but a very worthwhile endeavor.

If your mom is a DAR, very strong possibility you are an SAR. Ask her to provide her DAR provenance and you should be a shoe-in.

I'm sure I would be. Somewhere in my stack-of-stuff I've got the info on the great-grandfather that was a Patriot. I even found the story of a battle he was in and was the only survivor.

My daughter bought a subscription to ancestry.com and in the past 60 days, she discovered that my 6x great grandfather fought at the battle of Bunker Hill and was present when Washington took command of the Continental Army and served with the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment for the next 3 years. cool stuff. I've been thinking about looking to see if we have a local SAR chapter around here.

One of my ancestors was Capt. Robert Converse of the Continental Army. Have to look into this...

The DAR requires proof of lineage: copies of family bibles, tax schedules, census records, land grants to patriots, mentions in genealogical/historic books, etc. I know from my own experience that if someone in the DAR was able to join because of a link to your ancestor, you will only have to prove your relationship with her (or to the nearest common ancestor she linked to) because all her documentation back to the patriot will have been approved and retained in the DAR records. I guess the same is true of SAR -- just prove your lineage to him.

You can get copies of genealogical records from the DAR for a nominal fee -- I believe it costs about $10. Even if you do not join the SAR, obtaining those records for your own research can break through the genealogic brick wall that you might be banging your head against. I was able to close a four-generation gap back to the Revolution thanks to an unknown distant relative's comments on a website. With her information, I contacted the DAR and submitted requests for that person's records.

If no one else has the DAR POC I'll gladly search my records and provide the data for you.
