Regal Petroleum The sun appears to be setting on Regal Petroleum, the London Alternative Investment Market-listed oil explorer that turned the controversial Romanian-Australian entrepreneur Frank Timis into a semi-respectable and very wealthy businessman. Speculation is growing that the Timis-founded Regal, which gained notoriety for copping a record £600,000 fine from the London Stock Exchange for providing inaccurate statements, could have the last of its exploration licences sold off. Shares in Regal hit a new low last month and have now fallen 95 per cent since their June 2008 high, when the company had a market capitalisation of about $1 billion. The Financial Times recently pondered on whether the company could be wound up. The latest batch of bad news came two weeks ago, when Regal told the market that one of its wells in Ukraine had been plugged after a piece of equipment became stuck at the bottom of it. Regal's chief executive, David Greer, quit last month after some disappointing drilling results. Some shareholders have even petitioned Regal to appoint as its chief executive a former director of the Ukranian explorer Kub Gas and former Drug Enforcement Administration agent, Robert Bensh.
