While there appears to be no LAW making it illegal to eat and drink while driving, Kentucky State Police will begin checking for contraband like BiG Gulp's or McD's fries that might distract drivers. But it doesn't stop there....they are looking for anything that distracts drivers.

So that means the police officers are being distracted by their radio, their radar, and their computers wouldn't it?

Personally I Get distracted by all the flashing lights and it seems most drivers do. I mean let a police officer stop on the shoulder of the road with his lights on to help a stranded old lady who has had a flat and traffic slows to a crawl due to the distraction.

I also get distracted by the fact that there is a guy walking up to my car with a gun if I get pulled over.

Time to outlaw those items in vehicles?????

The average CHP officer makes more than 100k annually, with some making more than 300k annually.

Nice to see tax dollars well spent on over payed cops, working hard to make sure maverick firefighters know their role.

It's too bad KSP don't make near that much. Perhaps they're fundraising to increase their pay??

When the tax coffers are low they must find new revenue streams/fines to keep the monster feed.

CHP officers make much more than that from what I can tell. I think metro areas account for a large portion of administration salaries, which brings the average officer salary down.

I have no idea what your source's sources are, but that is way off.

By my calculation, an officer reaches that top step after 5 years. Said officer will also receive:

• Pre-and Post-Shift Work Activities Pay Differential: a stipend equal to 3.5% of their base pay, which is 2371.74 for that 1st year officer and 2941.26 for the top-step officer.
• Physical performance Pay (PPP): 780.00 per year for the first 5 years, 1560.00 thereafter
• 8 1/2 Hour Workday Pay: "an additional 6.25% of their base salary, or approximately $4,953 annually at the top step."
• Uniform Allowance: 920.00

Some other incentives:

• Bilingual Pay: 100.00/month
• Educational Incentive Pay: 2.5% of their base pay for having a certificate for an associate's degree, 5% for a bachelor's
• Field Training Officer (FTO) Pay: "an additional 5% of their daily base pay each day they serve as an FTO. "
• Investigator Pay: $50 per month for officers assigned as full-time Vehicle Theft or Fraud Investigators.
• Motorcycle Officer Pay: 4% of base pay
• Shift Differential: swing shift "averages $2,062 annually", graveyard shift "averaging $3,057 annually"

Also, medical, dental and vision benefits, and annual leave credits.

So, with salary and the incentives all officers are eligible for, an officer with 5 years' service has a basic compensation of $94,410.26.

Put him on a motorcycle, give him a BA, teach him Spanish, and put him on the swing shift, that goes to $105,235.50.

Again, that is not counting overtime or the value of medical and dental benefits, leave or retirement benefits.

Even in 1 square mile Hermosa Beach the average base salary for the police department, including 12 non-sworn personnel, is $87,426.47. That's before shift differential, uniform allowance, overtime, special duty, etc. I would assume that the CHP would earn at least that much.

Well, if they stay on 31W, on either side of FT Knox, they will make a killing pulling over HRC Soldiers and employees.

I'm an officer here in NC and I can assure you I don't make half what those CHP guys are making even including my approximate 300 annual hours of off duty pay.

If I make $40k in my home town in NC, the cost of living increase in San Fran should put me around $73k. While that shortens the gap, its still a disparity. One thing that boggles my mind is all the "stipends" the CHP guys get. We get a one time $1000 for Associates degree and $2000 for Bachelors. No other "incentive" stipend is available in our department. We are a moderate sized department with just under 700 sworn officers.

On another note, the dip shit CHP officer that cuffed the FF should be fired, immediately. I can honestly say that sometimes the media puts spins on LEO related stories to cast them in a bad light as I believe it generates ratings due to the emotional response it tends to elicit from viewers. But when you hear stories of things like this, it really makes us all look terrible.

I can say that in my department and the surrounding agencies I work along side, I've never heard or seen anything like the CHP FF incident. I can also say with utmost confidence that if anything similar were to transpire, the officer would be terminated without question.
