Jo Sul and I both currently work in the OCS program for the NM Guard. He is a TAC Officer and I am currently the primary instructor. My first weekend working with them was particularly tough on the candidates. They were totally ate up and earned some healthy reaming. They did many push-ups and low crawled a great deal in payment for their transgressions.

Later in class, the candidates were all feeling pretty whipped, complete with dirt in their teeth. One candidate, whose only military experience is that of an Army band member, asked me "Sergeant, have you ever done anything this hard?". This generated several chuckles from the other candidates. Yes, my SF tab and Combat Divers badge were on my uniform.

This also reminds me of another incident that I believe Sandytroop is familiar with. A young soldier asked an SF soldier what Special Forces were, having seen his tab. He replied that he issues basketballs at the gym. (AKA, Special Services)

Then there was the cadet who saw my Korean parachutist badge and asked what it was - I told him those were my combat balloon pilot wings.

Back in my cadet days, a MP Major interviewed me and asked about my prior service. When I told him I was an 18B he asked what that MOS was - I told him it was "In-Flight Missile Repairman" (and he believed me).

After PA school
 

I was unfortunate enough to graduate a butter bar...so there I am at Drum with a bunch of other butter bars-a large percentage of them fro variouas ROTC programs around the country.
I am at the all ranks for lunch, and chucklehead comes up to me from another table containing himself and about 4 others from his "ROTC class". The conversation went something like this:

HIM: My buddies and I have a question, and I want to be the one to ask it...
ME: Shoot
HIM: We want to know if you failed a year of school or if you went one year extra
ME: :confused: WTF are you talking about? I don't even know you
HIM: Well, it's pretty simple really, you are wearing 5 badges-Special Forces, stertcher bearer (EFMB), pilot (enlisted aircrew), jumpmaster, and SAS exchange course (HALO), that's is one for every summer camp-5 badges, 5 summer camps. It was really pretty easy You aren't too smart are you?
ME: :rolleyes: Man, you got me pegged. Your unit must be proud to have someone like you.

You've got to be kidding, is that serious? At K-State that kid would have had a 12" x 12" orifice for an a-hole, and that would have been from a freshman straight out of JROTC, not to mention what the seniors hould have done. We have a lot of prior service from Ft Riley, helps keep the ROTC world in line in KS.

Jo Sul lives in ABQ. I live in Edgewood and work in ABQ. Sandytroop is also a local.

Jo Sul and I do our Guard drills in Santa Fe.

Well hell, we ought to be able to get together for a beer sometime. There are a couple other ABQ guys on here also.

Yep, I'm serious. This individual has just had very little military experience. It's scary that someone with this little knowledge is allowed to become an officer. I personally believe that no one should become an officer until they have at least three years experience as an enlisted soldier.

That sounds good to me!! Sandytroop is usually in the AO on weekends. Jo Sul and I are here most of the time. I also work with BamBam and another one, who I don't recall his screen name right now.

Don't know Annie Sobel.

I know the "other one", he's a good friend.

Annie Sobel is in charge of NM Homeland Security, she used to be the WMD officer for the Guard. She is now an Air Force 1 star, she transferred from the Army to the AF. When she was at Womack (as an Army MD) she patched up some of the guys behind the fence.

Oh OK, she is way above my level then. I also rarely deal with any Air Force personnel, as far as the Guard is concerned anyway.

I retired from APD last December and started working here with BamBam and Matchanu a couple of months ago.
