Yarnell, AZ wildfire!

Quote:

ARNELL, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Eighteen firefighters have been killed in the Yarnell Hill Fire in the Town of Yarnell.

The fast-moving fire has burned 250 structures in the Town of Yarnell and grown to 2,000 acres, command center officials said Sunday night.

Earlier, 19 firefighters battling the blaze in Yavapai County had not been heard from as the wildfire headed into the Town of Yarnell, fire officials said.

Around 6 p.m., authorities said they were unable to establish communications with them, although they had been seen from a helicopter.

Wickenburg Community Hospital is preparing to receive at least eight firefighters suffering injuries, said hospital spokeswoman Roxie Glovers. The extent of their injuries was not known.

The men were killed about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix, near the town of Yarnell. It was the biggest loss of firefighter life since 340 died at the World Trade Center. It was the worst in a wildfire since 1933, when 29 were killed in Los Angeles.

We live near the base of Yarnell Hill in the Bradshaws and could see the flames.
It wasn't that big of a fire until a storm front moved in and whipped it up.
I was outside yesterday afternoon and the wind changed 90 to the South and very gusty...we got heavy smoke and charred debris in the air.....I suspect that's when the team got overcome.
They had the procession of fallen fire fighters thru town a bit ago. It wasn't well announced but our fire dpt had the truck on US93 with the flag on the ladder and anyone about (I just happened to be there by accident) stopped driving or whatever they were doing for the procession.
I've heard that not as many homes were destroyed as earlier reported...we can only hope.
Yarnell is a very small community and not a 'wealthy' one at that but the locals will pull together and do what's right by them.
Bad day in the desert.
