If the weapon is old/scarce?? You would do better on one of the manufacture fora. Collectors flock together and do not commonly make wild BS appraisals, as they are watching each other. You do need clear sharp pictures of the weapon and any factory stuff(box, paperwork, receipts, tools) that came with the weapon.

Also, a letter to the manufacture's historian might help. S&W's, Roy Jinks has access to all the serial/model/sales/shipping data going back to the Civil War.

I think they charge 50USD, but factory letters are invaluable when pricing old toys..

My 1st stop would be the gunbroker completed auction,, only the ones that were actually sold.

Talk to the guys at Shooters on Bragg Blvd. They should be able to handle the appraisal. If not, they can steer you in the right direction.

I have M1 and M1A1 carbines I want appraised. Pretty sure they aren't rebuilds but want another opinion.

JJ. I'm on the SW forum also, recently joined...Posted questions on a 27-2 the other day..I have 6 of them along with a lot of old models back to 1880.

I use it often for mine and any one else who is a Garand enthusiast. :D The book can trace every serial number on every piece from the "born date" on upwards.

It can't help with the appraisal part, but can help you get a better "feel" when you do take it to an appraiser and they're not jerking your chain.

Ed Hicks has a shop called Warpath on Hope Mills Rd and he'll give you an honest idea of what your WWII gun is worth. He isn't always open, but you can call him at (910) 425-7000 to make sure he's there. I don't think he goes to the Fayettevile gun shows any more (I don't either), but he usually makes the Raleigh and Charlotte shows. I even found him at the Asheville show a few months ago after I moved to the area.

You have to watch where you step when you go into his place. It's crammed full of old weapons and other military gear, with a path winding through the middle of it all.
