Army soldier has his stripes "pounded" on with a mallet resulting in a seizure and many other injuries.

When will we learn to not video tape these things for one and more importantly, when do initiation rituals go "too far?"

These questions shouldn't even need to be asked.

Sir it was more of a rhetorical question and an expression of my anger at these so called "leaders." Someone needs to put the teeth back in the machine and only then will this ridiculous crap stop.

I fail to see where you asking when we would learn to stop videotaping these examples of soldier abuse being rhetorical.

Well not just soldier abuse but the videos that are appearing in the media from overseas such as the marine throwing the dog off the cliff, soldiers urinating on corpses etc. What is it going to take for our troops to learn that the best TTP is no pictures, no video?

The hazing is a totally separate issue. I respect the traditions of the soldiers that came before us but at the same time we need to use some common sense when applying those traditions.

I hope that clears up my train of thought. I apologize for not putting my thoughts into a more understandable piece of text. I will make sure to work on that before posting again.

You are missing the point, or (again) failing to adequately communicate it.

Your "solution" appears to be for the troops to stop filming; vs for soldiers and their leaders to step up and do the right thing for their peers and subordinates. The "best TTP" as you put it is NOT no photos or filming, it is positive soldiering and leadership.

WRT having respect for tradition-there is NO tradition that allows a Senior NCO to hit one of his soldiers with a mallet in the chest. None - period. Not partial swing, not full swing. There is no excuse for this behavior. "Unit tradition" be damned. It remains wrong and not worthy of "respect for tradition".

Very well put, he very easily could have killed that young SGT. I am sure that some of the medics here on this board can attest to what a sharp blow to the chest is capable of causing.

Unacceptable on all levels. I have never seen anything like this in my eight years spent in the Army. That 1SG should be held accountable for his action just as any other Soldier would. IMO at a minimum he should be removed from the company and lose his diamond. :mad:

As we move our way through the ranks; into senior leadership positions we develop (or should) maturity and the ability to see things from hind sights. When I became a young buck SGT I had the typical “look at my big dick” attitude and based what at the time I call being a good leader on how loud I yelled or how many push up’s my Soldiers did in a day. After a few months of that “if you’re smart” you start to understand that you’re just an idiot with a big mouth, true leadership is teaching and mentoring your Soldiers into what the Army needs then to be. (These are not just words it something you have to truly understand) Apparently this so called 1SG (AKA: dip shit) did not go through this learning process and should start from the bottom again to recapture what he should learned in the first place. :o

I have over the years witnessed a few crazy stunts, especially during VN, and a few on my return the states...Most of which I can look back on and nod, and shake my head, this was stupid ugly!

The damn soldiers father was there, you think he wasn't going to video tape?!? That's your first clue. This 1SG is or really was a dumbass that likely should have never have been in that position. I really doubt that the CoC didn't know thus was going on for each of"his" promotion ceremonies.

yeah this was completely idiotic. It amazes me that a 1SG thought this would be a good idea, I don't think he should ever be in a position to lead soldiers again. He has violated that trust with this stupidity.

Will know more tomorrow, but I bet the 1SG has already been relieved, maybe even the commander. There is going to be an investigation. The company commander just went to a three block. The battalion commander may even get sliced into. The 82nd, while it may turn a blind eye to mild hazing, is a zero defects sort of bunch. Once this hit the media, the rules all changed.

As it should be. It shouldn't have to make it to the media to begin with, things like this shouldn't be happening. What person as an adult thinks this sort of behavior is acceptable?

Why? Doesn't really matter but it isn't because he was stupid. (It takes an agile mind to come up with this.)
He did it because he's one of those guys who thinks every thought he has is a good idea because he thought it and his position makes him important. (I'm betting good money this was not the first time this happened.)
My next, promotion (as if) when someone taps me, I'm gonna be so excited, I'm gonna knock his teeth down his throat.
