Irregardless if Barry isn't "far enough to the left" for this professor ..... I still like seeing people state the obvious.

Pandora listeners have commented about hearing campaign messages for President Obama. Thankfully -- to this point I have not.

My first thought was, wow, smart way to target your message. Prior to 2008, I had multiple indivduals knock on my door handing out his campaign materials. To-date, that has not happened and I am hoping it's a result of waning support at the grassroot level.

I've been voting in elections for almost 50 years, and never had anyone knock on my door handing out campaign materials. However, I have been bombarded (annoyed) with telephone calls (prerecorded messages) campaigning for every office from local dogcatcher to President of the USA. So far today my answering machine recorded 6 messages from the same phone number campaigning for Mitt Romney...that number is now call blocked and the messages dumped.

A number of years ago, I was receiving campaign calls from the county sheriff at my business on a daily basis, which resulted in quick hang-ups (this was before call block and caller ID was available). One morning the automated call came through on not one, but all 4 lines (including our inbound WATTS line)...to my horror hanging up did nothing, it didn't end the call, or release the line...the call(s) kept spewing out it's message in an endless loop. I called the sheriff's office and they said they couldn't do anything about it, it wasn't them making the calls, it was the campaign office. The campaign office said they couldn't help either, because it wasn't them making the call, it was a telemarketing company (working for them) and they didn't know how to reach them. After about 2 hours I was finally able to get someone at the phone company to end the nightmare, I did everything that I could to see that the Sheriff was not re-elected...He wasn't!

That takes "captive" audience to a whole new level :mad:

Well, I haven't been voting for almost 50 years, but have for several decades. Prior to President O'Bama's first campaign election, I had NEVER had anyone knock on my door. I had multiple visitors that year who were campaigning on his behalf. He won the state I reside in (which was unexpected) and district which historically voted Republican. I only brought this up because I thought his campaign broke new ground last time and believe they may be leading the way this year (in method not necessarily in substance).

Marketing -- marketing and more marketing. If you don't despise it now, read the book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow", by Daniel Kahneman. They understand the sheeple thought process and how to appeal to what he terms - system 1 ... as do politicans and their campaign machines.

So who is the good prof' going to endorse ?

IMO, the fact that there are many Americans who don't think the current president is far enough to the left is going to end up being a lost opportunity for the GOP. Instead of castigating the president for not doing what we think he should do, the GOP should have made the effort to hem the president in with his own base so they can see how he's failed to do what they think he should do. If the political right could hold its tongue--and there's still time to do this--the ensuing debates within the left would threaten a coalition that has been running on fumes since the Carter presidency. The president's campaign would then have to spend time and money mending fences.

MOO, the president's approach to electoral politics is similar to President Reagan's. (As I said before, I bet that the vistors' logs at the Reagan Library have some interesting entries.) By campaigning endlessly against Carter's record, President Reagan could side step some of the criticism from the right wing of the GOP.

The difference is that Reagan was a man of principle. So if he modified or moderated a position, his supporters could be certain he did so out of his personal conviction, his love for all Americans, his desire to make the world a freer place, and his unflagging optimism.

The current president does not have these traits and so his efforts to emulate Reagan ring hollow. At least to anyone who cares to pay attention.
