Intelligence Course
 

I am teaching an intelligence course this Spring at North Georgia College. The emphasis will be intelligence analysis for military and law enforcement using Analyst's Notebook 6 software.
The introduction to the course covers all aspects of the intelligence process using Johnson & Wirtz Strategic Intelligence: Windows Into A Secret World , and Frederick Hitz The Great Game: The Myth and Reality of Espionage.
I am willing to share my course syllabi (in progress) with others teaching similar courses, and welcome suggestions and assistance.

Get software other than Analysts Notebook. There are a number of other programs that while not as widely used are much more valuable for helping people understand analytical problems. AN is simply a visualization tool. Also, the algorithms it uses for social network analysis are mildly suspect ( from my perspective).

I appreciate your recommendation about software other than AN6. I am aware of what is available in the field, but the purpose of this course is not to train intelligence analysts (an impossible task in a one semester course), but to introduce students to the field of analysis, and to get them excited about the positions available in the military, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies.
Through a friend, I am able to keep informed about USASOC's ARISTOTLE and ASK systems, but this is a bit more than I want to expose to my students.
i2 was generous in giving the university 31 licenses and trained me at no cost to the university...a package worth about $150K. I am open to any other software provider who will offer the same deal.

Apologies. I was making my recommendation on the assumption that you were paying for the software. I can't think of any other packages that cost less than free. Powerpoint is as easy to use as the i2 suite, costs less and the products are easier to print.

Friends of mine who have discussed the subject with me also feel that any course that deals with the subject of analysis should include a through discussion of 'The Psychology of Intelligence Analysis ' available for free at http://www.cia.gov/csi/books/19104/

The Heuer book on analysis is a classic. I reference the book in the syllabus and give students the URL. I use some of his material in lectures. This is an upper division course limited to 15 political science and 15 criminal justice majors soon to be hitting the bricks looking for a job. Many are senior ROTC cadets and will be on active duty following graduation. Some were pulled from school for duty in Afghanistan and Iraq since they are members of either the reserve or guard. When they return after their tours, they are more mature and serious about their school work.
When I was teaching in San Francisco, I offered a full year course on intelligence analysis that was very popular. At that time, I was using the manual on analysis from the Joint Military Intelligence College.

Well sure wished I was there for the course! Always wanted O&I but in the end it was your the operator get the intelligence....
