Browse Bags ( sleeping pads)
3 Attachment(s)
Because weight can be such an issue we are reintroducing some historic gear made with modern materials. In Horace Kepharts " Camping and Woodcraft" there were a few items commonly used that have for the most part been forgotten . The browse bag were typically bed ticking ( mattress casing) that they took and stuffed with indigenous material for a sleeping pad, keeping them insulated from the cold ground and providing padding to sit or sleep on.
This is not for every environment and the leave no trace philosophy is important especially for tactical use. Here are some images of two different bags we have been working on. The large G1 Browse Bag weighs 2oz. empty the smaller bag weighs less than an ounce empty, doubles as a panel marker and weighs 8oz filled with 3 layers of Clima Shield Combat insulation wrapped with a space blanket for thermal reflection, it is like a heating pad (Shown folded in half and rolled). The third image shows the big bag filled with oak leaves and a G1 Liner ( system weight 26oz.....30f rating more with layering clothing ). |
Looks like a great idea.
I am sure that pine straw would make a good filling as well, except for the chiggers and ticks that the straw around here seems to contain. Another great product. TR |

TR- My first thought also--- I still prefer a hammock if Embassy Suites is full...

Thermal Blanket bag.
Weight is a really big issue with me.
If you could somehow get the thermal blanket bag inside a protective layer (inside and out) of material like the stuff used for the Hennessy Asym Backpack Hammock. So the thermal bag lasts and doesn't bunch up, I'd buy it in a NY minute. Those thermal bags have saved my ass more than a few times but don't last long on their own. Would use it for the purpose intended, for an inner shell, or just by itself depending on the conditions. Nice idea |
Glad to take a look at that. It sounds like somethings we are doing. You mentioned several things that hit close to home. Spent a fair amount of time in the desert and mountains just South and North West of your location. PM me when you get a chance.
