Thanks!

The part about the little baby was a little disheartening. Sounds like the kid will probably die.

Indeed indeed. With enough time, they'll get past the fear of needles. Or the Docs will develop a ruse.

That's what I was thinking, I think it would be damn near impossible for me to send a baby that small back knowing I could have done something to save it.

What are you implying?

Seems to me he was agreeing with the desire to develop a ruse rather than go along with the parent's misguided fear of needles.

That was it.

I'm not SF, nor have a played one on tv...hence this answer is prolly wrong. I'd rather piss off the sister and save the baby's life.....

If she snuck the baby out to begin with, would she really tell her parents the American's put a needle in it?

And if she did, in my view it still would be the right thing to do.

But then again, I was only trained to break things, and was never trained on "hearts and minds".

:)

NousDefionsDoc 09-18-2004 13:52

You're right, you're not SF. So I will explain it for you. Let's say you treat the baby over the sister's wishes, you have just violated about every law known to man regarding patient's rights (by proxy in this case), but that aside. Little sister goes and tells the local warlord, who then becomes enraged and mounts an operation to destroy the base for violating a local taboo. Worst case is he's successful and they kill everybody and it has world-wide implications. Or maybe they lob a mortar round in and it hits a barracks and kills just one or two people that had no idea the baby was even in the facility. Or the baby has a reaction or an infection and the mullahs issue an edict that under no circumstances will anybody go to the American for treatment as the Americans will kill them. Oh and BTW, Allah will protect you if you pick up a rifle and kill Americans. So they go out an ambush a Ranger rifle squad on patrol - again that know nothing about the baby.

We are not there "breaking things" although we can do that better than most. We are conducting foreign policy. There's a reason we don't have PFCs as senior medics on A Teams.

Damn NDD

I see you have been utilizing your chicken bones again in that Kutamunde skull...beat me to the punch. And well said might I add.

All that aside...
Can someone please sign me up, I think that clinic could use another SFPA for weekend and evening call...

No need to celebrate.

My main purpose in coming to this site is to get educated on things that I am unaware of. That and to sometimes offer input from a different angle.

I am a guest, and I realize that. Sometimes "education" comes in ways that aren't sugarcoated, and that's ok. FIDO.

:boohoo

No need to be a snively bitch either...
I simply agreed with NDD's post. It was directed to him, not you.
But since you would care to take this one step further...
Input from a different angle is fine, even encouraged - IF you have the background and experience to offer a contributing opinon. Otherwise, your input should not be accompanied by such thin skin when you are "educated"

Perhaps I did have a little sand in my [NDD Admin edit:There are females on this board] ...In hindsight though, I got slammed for basically agreeing with NDD's post.

Or another way to look at it is non-SF folks get slammed for voicing an opinion here, even if they have valuable input.

You win, I'll go back to lurking and my other sites.
