LSU Student to Burn Old Glory

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/05/10...est=latestnews

A student at Louisiana State University reportedly is planning to burn an American flag on campus Wednesday as part of a peaceful protest, the student newspaper reports.

The flag-burning comes nearly a week after police charged another student, Isaac Eslava, with taking the American flag at the campus' historic War Memorial and burning it hours after news of Usama bin Laden’s killing by U.S. Navy SEALs.

The 10-by-15 flag flew atop a 102-foot pole 24 hours a day at the campus and honors all the war dead from LSU. Police said there was about $7,530 worth of damage at the memorial and called it very "coincidental" that the event took place so soon after bin Laden's death.

Benjamin Hass, a communication studies graduate student, has reportedly followed university procedure in seeking clearance to host the flag-burning protest at noon on the Baton Rouge campus.

LSU’s student government president Cody Wells told The Daily Reveille that he and others plan to hold their own counter ceremony an hour after the protest, saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem.

“We’re going to respect [Hass'] First Amendment right to burn our American flag,” Wells told the paper.

Wells said he hopes to have a trumpet player and cadets perform at the ceremony.

Might be a good time to sit in some nearby bushes with a wrist rocket and some ball bearings for a little non-lethal harassment. Everytime Chuckles tries to light the flag, let go with one.

Snaquebite 05-11-2011 08:48

Not sure how the program is doing now, but I would have had a hard time controlling my ROTC students when I taught there (91-92), Especially my Ranger Challenge Team. They would have been planning all kinds of Ops.

PedOncoDoc 05-11-2011 08:53

Would a counter-protestor be within his/her rights to burn a photo of the intended flag burner and/or a dummy made in his likeness 30 feet away during his demonstration? :munchin

Take picture of the guy, he will no doubt lead to others of like mind who may be interested in a more substantial protest. ID them it will save time later on.

A counter protest reflecting his 1st Amendment rights, and his belief in executing his right to carry out such a protest in burning could be exampled by the burning of a symbol he holds dear.

Teddy, I would argue that most RVN protesters loved their country and unlike the protesters who opposed our involvement in the RVN, this form of protest is carried out by individuals who have no allegiance to America and want to see it destroyed.

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES

Quote:

Established in 1928, the LSU Department of Communication Studies is one of the oldest communication departments in the nation and the first in the South to develop a doctoral program. Situated in a research intensive university, the department and its faculty strive to foster the intellectual growth of each student while also attending to their development in the areas of teaching and service. Our main goal is to prepare graduate students for success in their chosen profession in an environment that is innovative, stimulating, friendly, and humane.

Specifically, we hope to produce researchers capable of generative critical thought and scholarship; to balance areas of specialization with a holistic approach that stimulates dialogue between areas; to understand communication as both an art and science; and to provide creative outlets for communication expression and experimentation, such as the HopKins Black Box, the Mixon Lyceum Debate Program, the Relation Station Matchbox Interaction Lab, and Studio 151.

The program offers a MA degree with a thesis or non-thesis option and a PhD degree in three broad areas of specialization: Communication Theory, Performance Studies, and Rhetoric. Within and between areas, a broad range of courses is offered, and each student is encouraged to design a program of study that fits his or her interests. A student may, for instance, concentrate his or her course work and research in one area or work across areas.

Communication Theory examines interpersonal communication with special attention to marriage and family, social cognition, health settings, life-span, and the role of the individual in communication. Our approach is primarily quantitative and mixed-methods.

Performance Studies features communication-centered approaches to performance in three main contexts: the cultural, the historical, and the aesthetic. Our approach is qualitative, focusing on interpretive and critical analyses of performance texts, events, and processes.

Rhetoric focuses on the analysis of public argument, the persuasive power of linguistic and aesthetic forms, and the generation and critical analysis of civic discourse. Our central theme is that linguistic forms are not merely instrumental, but fundamental – not only to persuasion but to thought itself.

So what exactly did he get a degree in? Community Organizing? How does burning a flag equate to Intellectual Growth?

Read what others have to say :D

LSU Student to Burn Old Glory

Now, that's Tiger bait.

It's something I would expect from a four year old. He is nothing more than a useless attention whore and judging by the coverage of this story he got exactly what he wanted. If he had any balls he'd burn a Koran in Pakistan. If he got the same reception here that he would get for burning a koran in Pakistan you'd bet he'd pick something else to burn as the message is always far behind attention in relevancy to these losers.

American flag supporters stop flag burning at LSU

It seems several hundred students and others gathered at LSU and stopped the flag burning. Hopefully he got the message and won't be burning any flags anytime soon.

"Several hundred people gathered on the LSU campus today and effectively stopped an LSU grad student from burning an American flag on campus"

It is too bad that the counter-protesters' support for the flag was not balanced by an abiding respect for the Constitution.

Mr. Wells's counter protest was the way to go.

YMMV.

If it was his flag he can burn it....

As Sig has noted - if it was his flag he could burn it.

I think the counter protest would have been more effective if they would have lined up a number of flags from other counties. Like Mexico, Saudi Arabia - you get my drift - and torched them off the same time he torched his flag.

A Koran of two would have been a nice touch....................

Hey, baby, what's that you said about free speech?

Thinking on the issue I think whenever something like this occurs a few people need to show up with a Koran and say "If you torch your's we torch our's."
