S.o.s

Ok, so I woke up at like 0445 with my mouth watering for some S.O.S and grits. Bleeech! Wow, flashbacks of Rice Services from '88 must stick around forever.

Guess I will have to settle for some honeycombs.

Solid 09-01-2004 07:25

What's S.O.S? After morning PT nothing is better than a bowl of grits with brown sugar. Mhhh...

S.O.S would be Shit On a Shingle or creamed chipped beef on a slice of toast/bread.

Solid 09-01-2004 07:43

Thank you.

don't forget the eggs over easy to chop up on the whole mess.

I've heard about these grits...some kind of balls of mushed up shit arn't they?

Solid 09-02-2004 05:22

Negative.

Grits are a lot like thicker pieces of cream of wheat. Different taste, slightly different texture, and a helluvalot better, but that's the closest thing I can think to. Grits can be eaten as I do- for breakfast... or they can be fried and eaten for lunch, dinner, etc, with meat, vegetables....

The most versatile food out there.

Roger. Are they homemade or a store brought kind of food?

They usually come like Cream of Wheat in a ground form and you add water and bring to a boil. The beta-glucans that are naturally in the grits will bind together and make it thick.

Of course there are instant grits, But no self respecting southener would use instant grits. :D

Then again I am a tried and true yankee who believe grits are one of the worst foods on the market. Gimme either Cream of Wheat or Maypo and I am happy.

Grits are a food group in the south

I had never seen a "grit" until I got to Benning. Then I saw all the grits I would ever want to see they served grits at every meal! Sadly they only made them in the morning so by lunch/dinner it had grown skin. Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech!

Agreed. First breakfast at Benning went something like this:

Dan: "Ick, what the hell is that stuff?"
Fellow trainee: "'em are grits!"
D: "What the hell's a grit?"
FS: "'em are!"
D: "What the hell have I gotten myself into?" :D

Sir, LMAO! I have a mental image...oh my indeed!
If, and this is a big if, I am cooking breakfast for a man, I prefer to fix eggs over easy, pancakes with butter and maple syrup, sausage, biscuits with gravy, and hash browns. It tastes great with a vodka-orange juice.
I do not know if I have ever fixed a "grit" though? That might take me out of the running with men? :D I don't know.
