Organizers of Vietnam veterans' tribute to include complete picture of era

"Fayetteville's 10-day tribute to Vietnam veterans this fall should portray a complete picture of the era and its impact on the city - including opposition to the war, the mayor says.

The anti-war rallies on Fort Bragg's doorstep remain a difficult memory for many Vietnam veterans. But organizers of the city's first Heroes Homecoming in November want to include all the chapters in the nation's history from that time.

"It is an important part of the story we're trying to tell," Mayor Tony Chavonne said....."

"........With the patriotic soldier and family in mind, planned activities include a Vietnam Wall traveling memorial, a wreath-laying ceremony, tributes to local Vietnam veterans and the nurses who served, and the rededication of a Vietnam War Memorial on Fort Bragg.

But as envisioned by Chavonne and other organizers, the homecoming also will include perspectives from native Vietnamese, homeless Vietnam veterans and anti-war protesters.

"We're part of that story," said Chuck Fager, director of the Quaker House......."


Somehow I just don't see the need for the group hug on this one.

I can foresee the poser factor being even higher than normal for this one...:(

lol I heard an instructor describing in minute, BTDT detail the action at Hue one time, and he pronounced it to rhyme with "screw". Couldn't understand why the class kept snickering.

When I was a youngster at Bragg I had an old NCO tell me that even Hanoi Jane showed up one time.

Mark46 and I were in SFTG when 'she whose name I will not utter' tried that - accompanied by Donald Sutherland. The group they were with was prevented from entering the post by the MPs.

They then went down to Hay Street and held a rally in the hippie hangout on the corner of Hay Street and Bragg Blvd - CRS the name of the place but I used to go in there for a mug of hot apple cider w/cinnamon stick whenever I got tired of sipping beer and watching the twirling tatas at Rick's or the Seven Dwarves. I didn't go there too often which is probably why I can't remember the effin' name of the place.

Hey Pete,

I understand that there was a major fire at Rick's sometime after I ETSed and it relocated. Is there still a Ricks in Fayetteville? It's gonna be on my list of places to see when I come back. Probably nuthin' like the old one though. The fights were just as much fun to watch as the flesh.

MM - Ricks is long gone. Just about every place that had a bar is now Museum, medical building, Police or city hall. Bright spot is the Huske Hardware Bldg - great beer.

Then it had to be either the Pink Pussycat or Saigon...

Those brain cells didn't survive, incidentally.

Shotgun blast
 

The shotgun blast is all over the target but just missing the bullseye.

Remember the north side was the "short" side. The east 1/3 was taken up by the small Publishing Building set back from the sidewalk - had a yard - and the oak tree on the corner. GIs would grab a slice of Pizza or Sub from the little shop on the other side of the street (corner) walk back, sit along the low cement edge of the yard and munch while waiting for the Vomit Comet.

Was about 7 bars on the remaining. First two to go were down at the other corner and that area became a Cab hang out.

How about the impromtu boxing matches that were held in the parking lot of the Flaming Mug every Saturday night by inebriated members of COSCOM and Division?

This thread is bringing back some fun memories...:p
