The Ho-Chunk Nation & Sacred Tobacco

Interesting article in this month's Legion Magazine about the Ho-Chunk Nation (WI Area) and Sacred Tobacco.

Items covered in the 1798 American Indian Religious Freedom Act.

It would seem their Sacred Tobacco is pretty green looking and is often mistook for something else - marijuana.

One tribal member who had his tobacco with him was Cpl Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr. (Korean War 11/05/1950).

Appears to be a thorny issue since it looks like marijuana - and is a tobacco product.

I would try and understand - but would also like the warrior to understand why he gets to piss in the cup each time the box comes by.

The indigenous Americans were and apparently still are into using mind altering substances for 'religious' practices.

The Native American Church of Oklahoma and other areas still practice with Peyote.

"The white man goes to church and talks about God."

"We go to church and talk to God."

I would try and understand how a tribe of Indians could name themselves the Ho Chunks without it actually being reefer...

You might know them better as the Winnibego - but that was a name given to them by their Indian neighbors and badly translated by the French and English.
