Need Some Opinions

Gentlemen,

I graduated from my undergrad program last Saturday, and I am looking at buying myself a little graduation present with some money I have saved and got as graduation gifts.

I have a couple of options that I am particularly looking seriously at, and I would greatly appreciate some opinions on the matter.

I know it is usually suggested that what is important is my purpose for buying before a good decision can be made. For the sake of argument lets just say any of these items are purely for entertainment/enjoyment. I'm just a dumb country boy who likes his guns.

What I have been looking at:

AAC M4-2000 silencer for my AR's
AAC TiRant .45 for my usp compact

Remington 700 in .308/McMillan or AICS stock. (AAC is supposed to be putting out a silencer ready Remington in a McMillan stock soon for <1500)

Save for Scar 17's release (I know most of the posts regarding the 16s haven't been to favorable but the projected price point on these is comparable to a .308 AR)

Any other .308 AR

HK45c

I am open to suggestions.

When replying if you could state why you would choose an item that would be much appreciated.

I would like to stay under $1500 but I am willing to save for a while if there is a good reason to.

If this thread is not appropriate please remove.

Thanks in advance for your opinions/advice.

Don't waste your money on a Rem 700, for a whole bunch of reasons. Save your pennies, get a Sako TRG, or a nice .308 AR (Not DPMS or Bushmaster). If you have large hands and want a .223 semi, get a Sig 556.

From a FOG,,

Put the 1500 in an IRA and in 20 yrs, you will be happy..

Former Action Guys(FAGs) tend to abuse body parts on a way to frequent bases. It's why many retire in their 40t's..

When you get to be a Freak'n Ole' Geezer (FOG) you will have accumulated enough Paso's to commiserate with your buddies, buy a cold beer(S), and buy toys..

My $00.0002

AAC TiRant .45 for my usp compact If you're looking at suppressors, you might consider an .22lr suppressor. I've got an AWC amphibian and it's one of the most fun guns to shoot. And it's cheap to feed. But if I was going for one of the two mentioned, I would go with the M4-2000. I sold my pistol suppressor (9mm) as I never really used it.

Save for Scar 17's release (I know most of the posts regarding the 16s haven't been to favorable but the projected price point on these is comparable to a .308 AR) Any other .308 AR No - The 17's have not had good reviews from the guys who have REALLY put it thru it's paces. I would go with an AR-10 for that price point.

Congrats on graduation.

If I'd have listened to myself at your age - I'd be retired already and buying toys for big boys NOW instead of waiting one more year to "check out"!

JJ is right... listen weedhopper!

This is excellent advice and is not lost on me. It was also hammered into my head for the last 4 years about putting money away now for retirement. In several classes we even spent time doing models to forecast how much we would have after a certain time period, at a certain rate, etc. I am on track to put away $2,000 this year into an IRA. My employer will also contribute 4% of my salary. I would like to contribute more but I am also trying to pay down my loans by $10,000 over the next year before I begin my next bout of school.

The point of all this is, I have tried to been smart with my money (I live on the cheap) and have been able to put aside a little bit just to spend, but I appreciate the help. In light of these suggestions though, I may cut my budget a bit, or take some money away from this fund and wait until I save some more back up.

I still would be interested in more opinions and advice. Thank you to those who contributed so far.

My advice takes second to the (timeless) wisdom of saving the money.

If you must purchase a rifle, look at the Tikka rifles, or the base line Savage heavy barrels. 4-600 will buy a decent action/barrel, and you can add a good stock down the line.

I will add that saving money has allowed me to pursue, for nearly a year (and counting hopefully), turning a hobby into a business.

J

Don't forget, a decent optic for a precision rig would run about 800 min, up to 4k

Well I also look at any purchase I may make especially in the firearms area an investment. Firearms especially have a good resale value. I have always found a way to save and have big boy toys at the same time. the '70 firebird I have in the garage will tell you the same story. I try to buy in things that I can sell if I have to, but also very much enjoy myself.

Why do you recommend Tikka or Savage over the Remington. I always thought Remington set the standard for quality bolt actions?

edited to add: I'm not being a smartass I really am curious.

That is definately out of my price range.

craigepo 05-07-2010 05:15

If you are going to the 18x program, you will likely get plenty of time with an M4 down the road. Moreover, your motivation to go shoot on weekends while in the Q course will be lacking. Result will be that you have a bunch of money tied up in a gun that will gather dust for at least a year, probably longer.

So, what are you going to do with the new toy? Home defense(not really necessary now if you will soon be living in a barracks), hunting, shooting paper, etc?

Gosh JJ. I was going to tell him to blow it on Strippers:D

I do agree thou if you want a .308. Go with one of the many Semi Autos available out there. Armalite and Knights Arms make good ones. Knights will cost you thou.

Reading back over my posts made me realize I never thanked those of you who responded to this thread and left some questions unanswered. For that I apologize.

Koz: Thank you for the congrats.

craigepo: The question of usefulness was not lost on me and as of yet I have still not bought anything.

Kgoerz: Thank you for your recommendations.

My update for those interested:

I have cut my budget down and am simply looking at a bolt action to use for more medium to long range shooting/hunting. I am looking seriously at the Remington 700 AAC-sd which I have mentiong in the Precision Rifle thread as it seemed to apply to the OP of that thread.

Quick mention of my loan situation as I was given valuable advice to save my money. Thank you to those who recommended I save my money. I have recieved my student loan information and will begin repayment next month. I had no idea I had borrowed so much to go to school so all of my plans are now further delayed while I make some money and pay them down. (not delayed indefinately I have just had to rearange my timeline and 25m goals.)

Based on the advice given to save my money I will be able to contribute more towards removing my debt on loans with outrageous interest (which I also was unaware of).

Once again thank you.
