Not just another vacation spot


MIREBALAIS, Haiti - Nightly, camouflage-clad rebels patrol this central Haitian town, still armed and active five months after the rebellion that led to the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Under international pressure, the new government has ordered factions to give up their guns in less than two months, but it has shown little willingness to confront ex-soldiers controlling parts of the countryside despite the presence of U.N. peacekeepers.

The rebels, for their part, say no one can force them to disarm.

This story poses am interesting question, are the "rebels" citizens first or rebels first, is the problem with the ownership (possession) of arms or the use of them on patrol?

I'm reading a (liberal) book called Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder (Pulitzer Winner) about Dr. Paul Farmer, who started the Partners in Health charity clinic in Haiti. Involves much political analysis, which is interesting... but also is very leftist.
Starts off mentioning SF soldiers, which was odd.

Not really recommended, but interesting none the less.
