Is this possible? A Chat Room

Was sitting here htinking, thinking even, ok, I'm relaxing and drinking a beer. So whenever I look at the "Who's Online" and you always see like 20+ people looking at "Who's Online"...lol, funny. Has anyone ever considered a real time chat room, where we can Drink a beer, fart, and scratch our butt, while chatting and seeing whos on. I see this functionality out there, was just curious. Surely there are a couple rocket scientists that frequent these halls, who might now how to connect the dots to make that possible.

It could easily be done, but the from the admin/mod point of view it would require one of us actively on there 24/7. Probably not going to happen; most of us have active lives where we can't monitor 24/7. You could however, set up something off site if you chose to do so at any given time on your own, but it wouldn't be run by us.

If this so called, or named offsite chat room was set up, could the admins place a link, with appropriate disclaimer that this is a non affiliated, non monitored site, where members from here could click to access?

I could see where we could allow administrator rights to the chat room, for all members of this board, so if they were on it, they could ban, or bump unappropriate individuals off the chat room

I have never set up a CR, but would it be possible for someone to just leave an open window open up for the site? It may not be worth the electricity usage, but perhaps one may not mind.

Giving _everyone_ admin rights could be problematic. It could end up with everyone banning everyone else when everyone has a bad day and all that. ;)

Speak for yourself there buckwheat! Drinking and farting are okay, but scratching your butt??? Now that falls under way to much TMI, not to mention if you are going to show off that part of your anatomy, you might as well show off the rest. Just remember if you ain't buff, you are subject to being pointed and laughed at!:D

I see a lot of problems with this.

I'd be willing to host a chat on one of my servers but you still have the problem of who's going to monitor it? If someone can come up with a plan, let me know. I'm open.

Chat rooms = Trouble.

Might be a better idea for you to use something like Xfire or ICQ where you can choose whom is invited or on your friend list.

I'm sure DHS or some other Federal 3 letter Agency would "volunteer" to monitor. Heck, I'd be willing to bet you'd never even know they were there!

You think they're not now?

We have threads and forums, PM and email, how much more contact do you want?;)

And I agree, we cannot control a chat room type of area and we don't want to.

Hit f5 a lot it is like chatting in slow motion :D

From the POV of a 'part time' admin on another Vb site (I think it uses a PHP chat room) we just rely on the users to behave or tattle if some get unruly.

Ours is set up "members only" though, so we know who's on there - and where they live. :D There have been very few problems that I am aware of, mostly alcohol induced rants, or differences of opinion.

I'd assume if y'all set one up, you'd PW protect it, just like your "QP only" areas in here... ;) So, you would only have to police up after yourselves. I dunno if I'd want to field that job though. "Hey you! You're on TIME OUT!"

All I'm saying is if you did want one, it's not the total AD/LOG nightmare some envision (assuming you keep the ash & trash out.)

A IRC passworded server could be setup, lots of bot admin function that could be used to control spam and such unwanted things. But I also see a lot of problems with it. I think I like PS right now in its singular form of a discussion board.

I never really understood the utility of a chat room, especially one sponsored by a forum. A forum gives more than adequate opportunity for interaction with the benefit, for those who choose, of previewing and editing items before posting.

What am I missing?

Chat rooms are for instant gratification types imho. I've used a few and they exhausted me after a few minutes. I can't type fast enough. A board like this one and a PM feature works fine for me.
