FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina Army post is trying to explain why a civilian was killed in an explosion near a firing range observation point.

Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum said Monday base officials are trying to sort out what happened.

Post officials say two civilians were in the area that overlooks the range where soldiers practice firing artillery, tank shells and smaller weapons at the time of the explosion midday Friday. One was killed, and the other was unhurt.

Fort Bragg spokesmen said the people were not Army employees.

The post is home to the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and Special Operations Command.

Watch where you step and......

Watch where you step and don't pick up "purdy thangs".

Was a short lived fad years back to play catch with unexploded 40mm HE rounds. Then there was the LAW rocket thrown in the dumpster, and.....

Anyway the fayob story

Hunting scrap metal.

Two less duds on the impact range - one munition and one India-Delta-10-Tango.

Richard's $.02 :munchin

I have never been to Fort Bragg, how hard is it to get onto one of the ranges to search for scrap metal?

Red Flag 1 11-02-2009 17:09

Seems Mr. Blue found some metal!

How hard is it to drive to a range (past all of the warning signs), get out of the car, and walk into the impact area?

Incidentally, the last couple of weeks have clearly been an artillery exercise to anyone who was not deaf. We live abput three miles from the edge of the reservation, and our house was occasionally rattled.

We had scrap metal thieves when I ran Coleman back in the late 80s.

Recently a bunch of illegals sold a load of scrap off Bragg to a Raleigh recycler who discovered after the furnace exploded that there were a bunch of 81mm duds in the load. They must have been watching the news, because when the law went to round up the aliens, the trailer had been cleaned out and they were long gone.

I guess what I was asking is the area immediately around the range tightly controlled? Did he have to hop a fence or did he go through the main gate and drive right up to the range and start picking through the scrap metal. I have no reason for asking other than curiosity.

The ranges on Bragg are not part of the secure, fenced area. The installation is composed of 148,609 acres (232.2 sq mi). I would guess roughly 100,000 acres are impact area. Their are at least a dozen unsecure paved entrances and hundreds of firebreaks and trails entering the post.

These idiots were committing criminal trespass and theft of government property. IMHO, their gene pool just got a little chlorine.

We had a scenario just like that at Ft. Lewis, WA back in the summer of '83. Some tweekers were out in an impact area collecting ordnance. One of them picked up an unexploded 90mm recoiless rifle projectile and dropped it into the back of a pick up. When it detonated it killed both of them. As TS would say, "stupid is as stupid does."

The biggest problem is that the roads that lead to the ranges are public access state roads. Anyone can go on that portion of Bragg.

It is big boy, common sense, don't be a jacka** rules. When a sign every 10 meters states, unexploded ordinance, do not enter, well the police call it a clue.

These gentlemen did not have one of those. :D

Hell, you guys missed the fools that came crawling out of the impact area one morning because their vehicle was stuck "out there in the woods". Unfortunately "the woods" was the impact area for 105, 155 and MLRS practice. The vehicle, or what is left, is out there now as a new target. :D

Welcome to Fort Bragg, watch where you step.
