Dove Opener

Dove opens the first of September. It is one of my favorite hunts. Not because it is fun, lots of shooting, easy hunting and the birds taste good. It marks, for me, the traditonal start of the Fall hunting season. I know there are deer seasons that open in August in some states but Autumn is what feels right to me. Quail, chukar, pheasant, water fowl. Yee Haw!!!

Every year we head to Yuma for opening day. No other hunting like dove hunting.

This year we will be going to Blythe, Ca on the Colorado River Indian Tribes(C.R.I.T.) reservation. I wanted to go to Yuma but I have time restraints this year...Good shooting!!!

I always go to Mckee Beeshers WMA in Montgomery County Md. They plant sunflowers fields. Shooitng starts at noon and about half the time or more I get a limit.

Here is a picture of my kids last year on the dove hunt.

Thank you for the heads up Buffalobob! I've been looking for a place to dove hunt near my location. I appreciate the info :)

If you are hunting alone, i.e, not with a group, you can hunt with me if you wish being as my kids will not be with me this year. Opening day is on a Tuesday and you have to arrive early to get a good spot. Sometimes I will hunt squirrels for a little while in the morning.

Send me a P.M. if you are interested.

How do you guys cook your dove? I put the breasts in a sweet BBQ sauce like Sweet Baby Ray's then pour in a bottle of Frank's Red Hot and let em sit in the fridge over-night. I cook them up on the grill...Good stuff!!

Buffalobob 09-01-2009 17:32

It was a slow day. I only got half a limit. Out of maybe 100 people there, I suspect nobody killed more than me. It was just one of those days when the birds are not flying even though the weather seems to be fine.

Good shooting Buffalobob! Better than getting skunked. Wish I could of been there :boohoo

mark46th 09-04-2009 19:27

I got a limit, 10 birds. I should have been don by 8:00AM but I shot terribly. I had my eyes fixed this year and I am on a diet that has taken 70 pounds off of me.

My hunting buddy says I was a better shot when I was fat and blind...

BB, How do you clean those birds; do you dip them in boiling water, or completely remove the the feathers with the skin? Also, what method for cooking? Tx

mark46th 10-03-2009 23:08

I use a pair of game shears and just breast them out. Then I pull off the featers and skin...I have a bowl of water that I put them in as I clean them....
