Commander in March submarine crash relieved of post

The officer in charge of an American nuclear submarine that collided with another U.S. Navy vessel at the mouth of the Persian Gulf last month has been relieved of command.

The Navy said in a statement Tuesday that there was enough information to remove Cmdr. Ryan Brookhart from command of the USS Hartford, even though an investigation into the incident is not yet finished.

The statement said the submarine skipper's commanding officer, Rear Adm. Michael J. Connor, "expressed his loss of confidence in Brookhart's ability to command."

The Hartford collided with amphibious ship USS New Orleans in the Strait of Hormuz early on March 20.

Brookhart has been temporarily assigned to a staff job in Bahrain, home to the U.S. 5th Fleet.

He's smarter than your average bubble head so I don't believe it'll be an issue. Rumor has it that they relieved and reassigned everyone from the navigator to the squadron commander, although the official investigation and details have yet to be released. ;)

Sub drivers have it tough.

The boat has had a ration of bad luck and hopefully it has been expended. The aforementioned incident was the second in the last 6 years or so I'm hoping that is all done, he officially receives his orders this week and was given the mandate to 'fix' whatever issues exist.

The passive sonar on most US subs is better than most of the other worlds subs active sonar.
I have little pity for the idiots that don't "look" before they surface. Remember the idiot that cut the Japanese boat in half killing a few and sinking the boat just because he wasnt to have some fun with an "emergency" surface? The "big" ocean theory doesn't cut it anymore, especially when you're driving a half billion dollar taxpayer machine.

IMO The repairs should come out of his pocket.

I faired better on Oki after a Typhoon. We’d re-canvassed the vehicles but my jeep, including the mirrors and windows, was covered with mud. After breakfast I was stopped at the main gate and told to go back to the OR and raise the flag. I backed out of the gate and onto the hood of a POV Toyota sports car owned by one of the cooks.

Top said that I could pay for the damage to the POV (none to the jeep) or take an Art. 15 and the Army would pick up the tab. I took the 15. My punishment was cleaning up the debris on our beach.

When I was walking down to the beach carrying my rakes, a Marine driving a tractor with a rake attachment stopped me and asked how far the beach went. There was a large rock that separated our beach from Camp Schwab’s. I told him it went past that rock.

An hour later I reported to Top that the beach was clean. :D
