Benicio Del Toro Storms Out of 'Che' Interview

A Washington Times interview with Benicio del Toro about Steven Soderbergh's new movie "Che," in which he plays the Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, ended with the actor storming out.

"I'm getting uncomfortable," the Times quotes del Toro, after fielding a question about the film's portrayal of the Bolivian and Cuban revolutions. "I'm done. I'm done, I hope you write whatever you want. I don't give a damn."

The Oscar winner then walked out of the D.C. restaurant in which the interview was being conducted last week.

The film is no stranger to debate and has been met with mixed reaction. The over 4-hour biopic portrays Che as a reviled figure who spread armed rebellion through Latin America.

However some have criticized the film for glossing over Guevara's stance on capital punishment, and glorifying the romantic notions of his legacy while ignoring his darker side.

"He took joy in killing counterrevolutionaries and was one of the most hard-edged, most Stalinist, pro-Soviet communists of the whole leadership," Ronald Radosh, a Hudson Institute adjunct fellow, told the Times.

Soderbergh defended the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Times reported.

"I've had people ask me: 'How can you make a movie about a murderer? A terrorist?'" he told reporters. "What they don't understand is that I'm in support of everyone who appears on screen. I have to be. I take the position of everyone who's on screen. I'm not judging them one way or another."

Guevara helped create Cuba's forced labor camps, and del Toro became agitated in the interview when the prisons were described as "concentration camps."

I saw the film, both Part One and Two. I have read a lot about Che's capture, and that is what I wanted to see the most (how Hollywood portrayed it).

Not surprisingly, I was disappointed. The film ignored Guevara's hardline Communist beliefs and instead made him look like a liberator. He justifies his actions throughout the film, especially in Bolivia, as helping the peasants. He asks, "Have you seen how you're peasants are living? Have you seen the infant mortality rate?" But his wanting to spread Communism through Latin America was never mentioned.

What I did like was a scene where the Bolivian president is having a meeting with a couple Americans about Guevara being in the country, and they make a direct reference to SF, saying "we have soldiers that can train your men in guerilla warfare, we did it in Vietnam." They also have a scene with SF soldiers training Bolivian commandos, who in the end kill Guevara after they capture him. How his capture unfolded in the movie is not how it really happened, according to history. But its Hollywood. :rolleyes:

A four hour film on Che Guevara.........not one I would have considered even hearing about.

DelToro should be running from interviews, IMHO.

Strangely, or perhaps not, after 4 years of HS and 3 more of college History, I read about Che for the first time here, on PS.com.:rolleyes:

No wonder there are those "americans" who support this type of crap movie, actors, directors etc...content to be sheep, IMHO.

Now, TS: You know that it was the Bolivians that got Che. It was coincidence that an MTT was around then.

Have not seen the movie but anything from Hollywood about a terrorist can not be good. Che was a coward and a Murderer. Good riddance......

It doesn't surprise me that Hollyweird made this movie. They aren't his only "fan club".. I have seen many of our young soldiers here in Fayetteville wearing t-shirts with his face on the front, 2 of those young soldiers were SF candidates. I was very disappointed. Worse yet, when I asked one of them if he knew who that was on his tshirt.
SF Candidate: yup, sure do. That's Che!
Me: And? Who was he?
SF Candidate: He was a revolutionary.
Me: And?
SF Candidate: And what? (with that he just gave me a haughty look)
Me: You don't know that he was a cold-blooded murderer and terrorist, a die hard commie?
SF Candidate: Thats not what we learned in school. He really helped his people. (he exclaimed with a bit of righteous indignation)

All I could do was shake my head and walk away. I got a lot of dirty looks from him for the rest of the time. :(

when I was a 1SG on Bragg, many years ago, I had a red flag with Che in the center of it on the wall behind my desk. When asked "why?"....my reply was "it's a reminder"....."Know your enemy!"

All someone has to do is read Che's Motorcycle Diaries to realize what an A-Hole he was. In his own words he is an attempted rapist, thief, liar, and braggert. It seems like he just enjoyed causing trouble. As far as the T-shirts go, I have a similar story...A couple years ago I was in a bar watching some bands play, and a guy had his shirt off and actually had a Che tattoo. I asked if he new who the guy was and he said "not really". I said you got that right if you actually got a tattoo of that MF. On another note, some band must have gotten sick of all the T-shirts because I noticed a song titled "Cli-che Guevara" scroll across the radio a few months ago. Take care. BN
