UFC Comming to Ft Bragg

UFC Fight Night: ‘Fort Bragg’ set for December 10 in North Carolina

By: MMAmania.com

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will once again pay tribute to United States servicemen and women when it stages a free Spike TV event for the troops at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., on December 10.
Similar to UFC Fight Night from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in Miramar, Calif., on December 12, 2006, the event will be free for military personnel to attend and likely feature a fight card that is littered with veterans of the armed services who now compete in mixed martial arts.
It’s going to be a busy month and an even busier week for the promotion — The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 Finale is scheduled for December 13 and UFC 92 is set to go off just two weeks later on December 27.
Talk about ending 2008 with a bang (no pun intended).
This will mark the first time the promotion has staged an event in North Carolina since the early (and dark) days of its existence. UFC 3: “The American Dream” took place way back on September 9, 1994, and UFC 5: “The Return of the Beast” was held shortly thereafter on April 7, 1995.
Both events took place in Charlotte.
Fort Bragg is known as the “Home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces,” according to the official Web site. It also the home for the XVIII Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne Division. The US Army Special Operations Command and the US Army Parachute Team (the Golden Knights) also call Fort Bragg home.
Stay tuned for more updates regarding the Fort Bragg event and its forthcoming line up … we hear good things. Get ready, Tar Heels.

Anyone on here attend? Curious to hear your impression of a live event. I attended one recently and loved it.

Gotta love the last fight, ktfo!

That was a really good card last night. They had some great fights on there. Great knockouts and submissions, I was happy with the fight. And they did it for a great cause too.

But I thought only military personnel were going to be in attendance, since I guess it was off base, they really could not be selective like they were at the MCAS Miramar a couple years ago.

Mike Swick is a friend of my extended famila. He was real excited to get back to Ft Bragg. I think he was going to try and make it to the museum and also to see the Dick Meadows Memorial....I hope it made it there today.

He looked good in his fight and finished it in .33 of the first. The after action review at mmamania.com says his opponent went to the hospital with a concussion after the fight.

The uglyist of the night was Cory Hill's broken leg... I know there are some folks on this site that have spent alot of time in Thailand and have seen some real serious Muy Thai leg kicking. Cory Hill does not have Muy Thai legs. This is the result.

I guess that fight was too gruesome to show on national TV. I have never seen it in person, but I have been watching MMA for around 10 years now, and it does not happen often but it does. With a fighter who is properly trained, especially in kicks, that should not happen.

I hope this weekends fights are just as exciting as last nights! :munchin

FORT BRAGG (WTVD) -- A charity at Fort Bragg raised $4 million for a planned $70 million research center for traumatic brain injuries.

The charity was sponsored by the national promotional group Ultimate Fighting Championship. The event billed as "Fight for the Troops" was broadcast live on Spike TV from the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville.

The Dec. 10 fight drew 2 million viewers. It is the second sanctioned UFC fight at a U.S. military base and 12,000 tickets for the mixed martial arts event were available only to Fort Bragg soldiers.

All money raised went to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and the Fisher House. The organizations are working with the Department of Defense to help build a research facility in Bethesda, Md., that will be dedicated to treating troops who suffer from traumatic brain injuries.

Statistics show brain injuries are one of the most common combat injuries suffered by troops in Iraq.

The organizations had already raised $50 million before the fight. They need another $8 million to start construction before Jan. 15.

Spike TV is still running commercials seeking donations and expects another million dollars to trickle in over the next few weeks.
