.25 caliber
NJ has night hunting for Coyote's, but limits the caliber to .25. My question is there a centerfire rifle in .25 cal. All my searches lead to pistols, not rifles.

Donno, my guess would be that it’s bigger than .22 (which a lot of states restrict for hunting anything other than varmints) but the next smallest rifle cartridge would likely be a .270.
It’s NJ so they probably didn’t want people claiming an AR-15 (.223/5.56) is a perfectly good coyote gun unless chambered in 6.5 or .308. I’m just spit balling here. |
Winchester 25-20 and 25-35,

25-06 if you can find one

Good list but it does not have the 220 swift rifle cartridge listed https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mUhDXqyJ9...0/cart_set.gif The NJ law states https://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/pdf/coyote-fox_faq.pdf Use center‐fire rifle (.25 caliber or smaller using 80 grain ammunition) (Daytime) Hunt during evening hours with 10‐12 gauge shotgun only using shot sizes as small as #4 fine to “T” shot Did the rule change for night hunting Penn ? |

I would suggest a .243 or .25-06. Good hunting. TR |
That .25-45 Sharps is not a black powder cartridge but a relative new .223 Rem necked up to .25 cal just for the AR15.

The 25-06 is old but reliable with lots of reloading data,

Thank you everyone for the azimuth correction.
7624U, no the rules did not change, but will be hunting on private land. |
Noticed the .257 Roberts is missing from that list. (7x57mm Mauser necked down)

The .25-06 is a great choice. My friend uses it with great success on boar. It will kill anything in North America. If you were shooting bear, I would up the caliber. I shoot a .22-250 and it is death on coyotes. Get an electronic caller... This is my friend's son with a badger that showed up in the prairie dog town we were shooting... he shot it with a .25-06 at 200 yards.

Another vote for the Winchester .243
I've had a few and you can find rifles in that caliber and the ammunition just about anywhere. It's good on white tails too. |
.25 Cal WSSF
I like this .25 Caliber rated bullet, nit sure if will meet the requirement.

FYI, not connected to SGammo, but get their email adverts. They have 25-06 ammo in their email today.
Seems odd ball stuff is starting to come back. It ain't cheap. $55.95 for a box of 20, 85 grain silver tip. |
