Perhaps more to this story (typical poor reporting IIRC KEL-TEC makes a .380 not a .38 semiauto pistol).

Given this agency's mission...if...the story is basically as reported this stop appears to be substantial overreach...at a minimum. Now, if a couple of lanes on a bridge or in a tunnel are closed -- look for a national news feeding frenzy...oh wait...this is a blue state...

So Florida must have made it a point to share this man's CCW status with the Maryland brown shirt thugs. Is this what we can all expect from our respective states should Maryland call running our plates and registration? F*** Maryland if I can avoid driving through it I will.

More likely the MDTA representative communicated with and put in a request to the proper authority in FL.

He was traveling on a major highway in an SUV during the holiday season and he had Florida plates. The cop saw "drug runner". :rolleyes:

There was a legitimate reason for the stop if there was information transmitted to a dispatcher and several other officers responded. I am not defending the cop in the least, but there is more to this story than we are getting.

Sorry folks but not surprised in one bit. The Trans police patrol pretty much everywhere and ALWAYS have someone pulled over by BWI.

Cell phone use while driving is now illegal too...unless your a cop, which are by far the worst offenders.

I know guys here on Bragg that will not drive through Maryland just because of this. Was talked about just before block leave. Like one guy said, best look at the states you're driving through to make sure you can with a weapon and what their laws are.

Second point is, once you get a CCW license don't you go into a federal record that law enforcement can "tap into"?

Depends on the State or the County. In Colorado, permits are shall issue by County. Only liberal and RINO sheriffs report higher.

Always wondered if states had to submit CCW Appts to some database. Just like our drivers licenses are open to every state. Along those lines.

In North Carolina, if you have a CCW, that fact is listed in NCIC. When an officer runs a vehicle registered to you or your driver license number, it states that you have a concealed carry permit. The officer knows before he comes to the car that you have one. It sounds like this may be the case and the officer may have assumed that he was carrying a firearm.

MD MTA does have a HUGE Homeland Security mission now, with the tunnels and related facilities. Has anyone noticed all the cameras that have gone up at major toll plazas and border state crossings? PA-NJ crossings now have facial recognition software. Marry that with your cellular equipment, vehicle GPS and related hardware, they start building a profile.

In one of the articles related to the MD MTA stop, there was information reported that MD MTA uses public accessed information. They data mine the interwebs and match everything to a person/ profile. Whether FL shared the information or not, there is enough out there to make everyone reconsider how they travel... and their route.

There is more to the story, but that will come at a later date. I am curious to read what is publicly released as to why the entire episode happened. There has to be a "trip wire" to start the ball rolling. MD MTA will not just pull a family vacation out of the sky to start a tin foil hat episode.

The "trip wire" could be as simple as a license plate reader. Auto run of the plate yields the owner information with a flag for any ccw information on the owner providing the alert. I don't see how the presence of a ccw record could be construed as pc for a legal stop, if someone where to challenge this.

Agree! Unless he saw the gun he has no PC. Just because a database says you have a permit doesn't mean you have the firearm on or about your person. The wife was not PC either because she didn't know if the husband brought it. "I don't know" does not equal "yes."

As a law abiding citizen we must understand our own rights or the police will trample all over them. Ask why you were pulled over...traffic violation? Then give me a ticket for that but you are not searching my car! I suspect you have a gun...what probable cause do you have officer? A database? Did your database see my weapon? No? Are you detaining me? No, I don't consent to searches! Am I free to go? Etc. if they are going to search let them and then call your lawyer! Find a lawyer and have their card on you! Stop talking, remember you have the right to remain silent, don't give up that right!!!!

The other method....avoid going through The People's Democratic Republic of Maryland.

So at this point I place this story in the category of:

Urban Legend, Plausible, Unverified.

And part of the "plausible" is the fact that several states, including my home
state of Tennessee, keep track of carry permits by the same agency and in the
same data base as driver licenses. Any officer who runs a driver's license check
on a Tennessee license will get a report that looks something like the (redacted) one below.
Notice that "GUN PERMIT STATUS" is reported at the same time the driver's license status is reported.

As a MD resident, I am hoping it is not true. If it is true, I am hoping there is more to the story than has been reported already. As thin as a pancake is, there are still two sides, so if true, I am hoping to hear the rest of the story. I haven't heard a whisper of it anywhere else, so I am hoping it is urban legend.
