S.o.s

Ok, so I woke up at like 0445 with my mouth watering for some S.O.S and grits. Bleeech! Wow, flashbacks of Rice Services from '88 must stick around forever.

Guess I will have to settle for some honeycombs.

Solid 09-01-2004 07:25

What's S.O.S? After morning PT nothing is better than a bowl of grits with brown sugar. Mhhh...

Solid

brewmonkey 09-01-2004 07:38

S.O.S would be Shit On a Shingle or creamed chipped beef on a slice of toast/bread.

Solid 09-01-2004 07:43

Thank you.

Kyobanim 09-01-2004 08:04

don't forget the eggs over easy to chop up on the whole mess.

Huey14 09-02-2004 05:17

I've heard about these grits...some kind of balls of mushed up shit arn't they?

Solid 09-02-2004 05:22

Negative.

Grits are a lot like thicker pieces of cream of wheat. Different taste, slightly different texture, and a helluvalot better, but that's the closest thing I can think to. Grits can be eaten as I do- for breakfast... or they can be fried and eaten for lunch, dinner, etc, with meat, vegetables....

The most versatile food out there.

Solid

Huey14 09-02-2004 05:26

Roger. Are they homemade or a store brought kind of food?

They usually come like Cream of Wheat in a ground form and you add water and bring to a boil. The beta-glucans that are naturally in the grits will bind together and make it thick.

Of course there are instant grits, But no self respecting southener would use instant grits. :D

Then again I am a tried and true yankee who believe grits are one of the worst foods on the market. Gimme either Cream of Wheat or Maypo and I am happy.

Kyobanim 09-02-2004 06:53

Grits are a food group in the south

I had never seen a "grit" until I got to Benning. Then I saw all the grits I would ever want to see they served grits at every meal! Sadly they only made them in the morning so by lunch/dinner it had grown skin. Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech!

Agreed. First breakfast at Benning went something like this:

Dan: "Ick, what the hell is that stuff?"
Fellow trainee: "'em are grits!"
D: "What the hell's a grit?"
FS: "'em are!"
D: "What the hell have I gotten myself into?" :D

Sir, LMAO! I have a mental image...oh my indeed!
If, and this is a big if, I am cooking breakfast for a man, I prefer to fix eggs over easy, pancakes with butter and maple syrup, sausage, biscuits with gravy, and hash browns. It tastes great with a vodka-orange juice.
I do not know if I have ever fixed a "grit" though? That might take me out of the running with men? :D I don't know.

This from a man who would eat Vegemite, which looks, smells, and I would suppose, tastes like shit.

Grits are great! You sure you ain't a Yankee?

TR

bberkley 09-02-2004 14:36

During PLDC I would get SOS, eggs over easy/medium, potatoes, and a biscuit or toast and mix it all together and eat it with a big spoon.

That was tasty.

Worst S.O.S. ever? FTX where we were getting our chow from one of the 18th ABN CORPS ARTY BN's, and the S.O.S. had the distinct odor of diesel. Our CW3 was NOT happy. He was about 6'6" and affectionately called "Lumpy" (but not to his face) for the brutal punishment he dished out during Platoon PT in the Bear Pit, or in other full-contact sports.

The next hot chow delivery was made by a MSG, and was close to the best food I ever ate that came out of a mermite container.

I'm pretty sure I ain't no Yankee; In fact, I'm deeper South than any of you guy up there :D

Brew? Hello Sir. So what would you eat?

Holly :)

brewmonkey 09-02-2004 15:42

What would I eat instead of grits?

Well dirt comes to mind.:D Anything but grits, no grits and cheese, no grits and butter or any other funky combination of grits and something.

Solid 09-02-2004 15:52

Grits are great.
Marmite and Vegemite, which tastes different, should be tasted on whole grain toast with butter and a VERY thin layer of the black goop. Too much, and it's too strong. But seriously, try it.

Brew Sir, I prefer to cook a homestyle breakfast. Honestly, I have never had a "grit". How about eggs over easy, pancakes with butter and maple syrup, sausage, biscuits with gravy, and hash browns? It tastes great with a vodka-orange juice?

Well? Maybe?

Holly

Solid 09-02-2004 15:59

I've been having grits and hashbrowns after morning PT every day. Greatest thing when you're shivering at 0800.

Sir, my favorite thing recently after morning PT is water and a muffin. Grits are an aquired taste...IMHO.

Wow! I can hear your arteries hardening from here.

Breakfast for me is a pot of coffee, a bowl of cereal (usually Honeycombs) and a piece of fruit with some yogurt.

DanUCSB 09-02-2004 16:22

Sorry NDD, this might knock me out of position as your favorite college boy, but I can't stand the stuff. I'm neither southern nor Yankee, so I think I have a bit of neutrality, but I gotta say, grits are about the worst breakfast food I've run across, beside fried tomatoes.

For a real breakfast, biscuits and gravy are the heat. Especially if you can get some large chunks of crumbled sausage in that gravy. Steaks and eggs (over easy, of course) might just tie. Pancakes are useless as food; their only purpose for existence is to act as sponges for transporting good maple syrup to my mouth. Ham is good, patty sausage better, and thick-cut bacon best.

Echoes, never did try the screwdriver-for-breakfast technique. Sounds like a good idea, though. :D As for the single bit, I don't think it's because of grits; I'd ascribe it to a lack of good taste in the men in your area.

If only! I do not eat what I fix...it is not in my dietary plan. The men I fixed that breakfast for are all about PT. Not a pound did they gain.

Even with PT high cholesterol is an issue. I have seen some pretty fit guys get taken down by bad cholesterol.

CPTAUSRET 09-02-2004 17:04

Grits are great, add butter, salt and pepper. Makes an excellent breakfast.

Holly, yours sounds good too.

I have had many chances to sample that nasty stuff, I used to party with the Aussies in VN, and it was prevalent. We spent 30 days in Australia a couple of years ago, it didn't smell any better then than it did back in the mid 60's.

Terry

brewmonkey 09-02-2004 17:57

My neighbor when we lived in St. Louis was an Aussie. They would always have little packs of it kind of like the jelly packs from Denny's.

Solid 09-02-2004 18:00

ROFL!

Solid's right- It's only really good for toast and in small doses. It tastes like crap when it's in a sandwich.

That's the Aussies for ya. Not a Kiwi food, I'll tell ya that.
No no, we're responsible for the crime of Marmite. I could puke on that shit.

Oh well. Guzzle a bottle of hot sauce and you won't be able to taste it anyway.

Brew Sir, very true! Got to watch out for bad cholesterol, it can follow you around like bad hair.

Dan, how very funny you are. (wink here)

Strange, it is 3am around here, and I am typing about "grits". Insomnia is a very bad thing. :)

Holly

Razor 09-03-2004 11:01

Dan, you've obviously never spent a few days in Irish B&B's if you dislike fried tomatoes for breakfast. That, several varieties of bangers, fried potatoes, thick cut bacon, slabs of soda bread toast spread thick with creamy butter and lots of tea to wash it all down. The local pub here even offers this as a meal, although the tea is replaced by pints of your stout of choice.
