Hillary's Balkan Adventures, Part II

"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
--Hillary Clinton, speech at George Washington University, March 17, 2008.

Hillary Clinton has been regaling supporters on the campaign trail with hair-raising tales of a trip she made to Bosnia in March 1996. In her retelling, she was sent to places that her husband, President Clinton, could not go because they were "too dangerous." When her account was challenged by one of her traveling companions, the comedian Sinbad, she upped the ante and injected even more drama into the story. In a speech earlier this week, she talked about "landing under sniper fire" and running for safety with "our heads down."

There are numerous problems with Clinton's version of events.

The Facts
(Updated below)

As a reporter who visited Bosnia soon after the December 1995 Dayton Peace agreement, I can attest that the physical risks were minimal during this period, particularly at a heavily fortified U.S. Air Force base, such as Tuzla. Contrary to the claims of Hillary Clinton and former Army secretary Togo West, Bosnia was not "too dangerous" a place for President Clinton to visit in early 1996. In fact, the first Clinton to visit the Tuzla Air Force base was not Hillary, but Bill, on January 13, 1996.

Had Hillary Clinton's plane come "under sniper fire" in March 1996, we would certainly have heard about it long before now. Numerous reporters, including the Washington Post's John Pomfret, covered her trip. A review of nearly 100 news accounts of her visit shows that not a single newspaper or television station reported any security threat to the First Lady. "As a former AP wire service hack, I can safely say that it would have been in my lead had anything like that happened," said Pomfret.

According to Pomfret, the Tuzla airport was "one of the safest places in Bosnia" in March 1996, and "firmly under the control" of the 1st Armored Division.

Far from running to an airport building with their heads down, Clinton and her party were greeted on the tarmac by smiling U.S. and Bosnian officials. An eight-year-old Moslem girl, Emina Bicakcic, read a poem in English. An Associated Press photograph of the greeting ceremony, above, shows a smiling Clinton bending down to receive a kiss.

"There is peace now," Emina told Clinton, according to Pomfret's report in the Washington Post the following day, "because Mr. Clinton signed it. All this peace. I love it."

The First Lady's schedule, released on Wednesday and available here, confirms that she arrived in Tuzla at 8.45 a.m. and was greeted by various dignitaries, including Emina Bicakcic, (whose name has mysteriously been redacted from the document.)

You can see CBS News footage of the arrival ceremony here. The footage shows Clinton walking calmly out of the back of the C-17 military transport plane that brought her from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.

Among the U.S. officials on hand to greet Clinton at the airport was Maj. Gen. William Nash, the commander of U.S. troops in Bosnia. Nash told me that he was unaware of any security threat to Clinton during her eight-hour stay in Tuzla. He said, however, that Clinton had a "busy schedule" and may have got the impression that she was being hurried on her way. See clarification below.

According to Sinbad, who provided entertainment on the trip along with the singer Sheryl Crow, the "scariest" part was deciding where to eat. As he told Mary Ann Akers of The Post, "I think the only 'red-phone' moment was: 'Do we eat here or at the next place.'" Sinbad questioned the premise behind the Clinton version of events. "What kind of president would say 'Hey man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife. Oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you."

Replying to Sinbad earlier this week, Clinton dismissed him as "a comedian." Her campaign referred me to Togo West, who was also on the trip and is a staunch Hillary supporter. West could not remember "sniper fire" himself, but said there was no reason to doubt the First Lady's version of events. "Everybody's perceptions are different," he told me.

Clinton made no mention of "sniper fire" in her autobiography "Living History," published in 2003, although she did say there were "reports of snipers" in the hills around the airport.

UPDATE Friday 6:45 p.m.

Lissa Muscatine, who served as Hilary Clinton's chief speechwriter in 1996 and accompanied her on the Bosnia trip, feels that I have failed to provide a full picture of what took place. She gave me her "vivid recollections" of the arrival in Tuzla, which I quote below:

I was on the plane with then First Lady Hillary Clinton for the trip from Germany into Bosnia in 1996. We were put on a C17-- a plane capable of steep ascents and descents -- precisely because we were flying into what was considered a combat zone. We were issued flak jackets for the final leg because of possible sniper fire near Tuzla. As an additional precaution, the First Lady and Chelsea were moved to the armored cockpit for the descent into Tuzla. We were told that a welcoming ceremony on the tarmac might be canceled because of sniper fire in the hills surrounding the air strip. From Tuzla, Hillary flew to two outposts in Bosnia with gunships escorting her helicopter.
UPDATE Saturday 8:45 a.m.

Gen. Nash says that I misquoted him in saying he was unaware of any "security threat" to the First Lady. While he was unaware of any "sniper threat," he now tells me there were a couple of "security concerns" that day, which he found out about after returning to his headquarters after greeting Clinton at the airport. There was a "non-specific report" of a possible truck bomb in the area. The military also had information that "some of the communications associated with the First Lady's visit were being monitored."

"In both cases, we took appropriate security action," said Nash, adding that Clinton's visit was not disrupted.

Anybody else with first-hand memories of Clinton's Tuzla trip, please send them along.

The Pinocchio Test
Clinton's tale of landing at Tuzla airport "under sniper fire" and then running for cover is simply not credible. Photographs and video of the arrival ceremony, combined with contemporaneous news reports, tell a very different story.

Four Pinocchios.

Next thing we'll hear of her on a swift boat in Cambodia during Christmas watching for "Charlie" and doing secret - no, wait, DOUBLE-NAUGHT secret mission "stuff". If she told us, she'd have to kill herself. But, trust her: she HAS the experience to be CINC.

Funny, I was in FLTCE from Jan - Mar 96 learning Serbo-Croat and prepping to go in country with my team and don't recall any incidents or perceived threats.... ha, ha.....

I was in country from Apr till Aug 06 and tried to avoid Tuzla and MND-North at all costs... with good reason too.. In a month time period Tuzla Main had 43 Accidental Discharges (to include 2 TOW missiles).... maybe that's the "sniper fire" Hillary is refering to.

I remember Bill coming to Tuzla in 1997/1998 and all the troops having the bolts for their rifles taken away by the Secret Service and locked up. Troops standing with their rifles shotguned over their shoulders while Bill reviewed the Troops. That was the biggest insult ever given to the US Military. Though on a side note, our guys were providing outer cordon support and not part of the dog and pony show.

Hell, Sarajevo was the "hot" place to be with Sniper Alley and the rest of the clowns shooting down at the airfield.

I doubt the that witch was ever in any danger. My guess would be everyone was running with their head down so no one saw them with her.;)

I was on the State Department detail guarding the American Ambassador to Kuwait during Desert Storm. We were headed to see the Crown Prince, we arrive, everything normal, we get the Ambassador into the Crown Princes residence and a minute later "Bang Bang Bang" a quick three round burst only a few hundred feet away, it was a Kuwaiti accidental discharge, cept it was an M-60MG...

Clinton Campaign Says She ‘Misspoke,’ Did Not Land ‘Under Sniper Fire’

Clinton Campaign Says She ‘Misspoke,’ Did Not Land ‘Under Sniper Fire’
by FOXNews.com
Monday, March 24, 2008

Hillary Clinton’s campaign backed off Monday from a disputed campaign claim, saying Clinton “misspoke” when she said she landed “under sniper fire” during a 1996 trip to war-torn Yugoslavia.

There were reports of snipers in nearby hills, but no known shots were taken at the landing craft or tarmac in Tuzla, Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson told reporters on a conference call.

“The facts are clear from contemporaneous news accounts that she was entering a potentially dangerous situation, and she has written about this before, she has talked about this before and there you have it,” Wolfson said in a conference call.

“Now, it is possible in the most recent instance in which she discussed this that she misspoke with regard to, you know, the exit from the plane,” he continued.

She'll Recover

You think to yourself - "Wow, how will she ever recover from this? No way she'll bounce-back" And, yet she does. It's just incredible. Don't bold face lies matter anymore? Are we that lost America? Are we?

I remember when Bill Clinton whining, as he wagged his finger in America's face and said, "I had no sexual relationship with that woman, Miss Lewinski." Lying like only a sociopathic liar can. I remember the week that this was all going on that 70% of the country believed Clinton was lying. A bit later the blue dress taught all of us that he was lying. Okay, so 70% of the folks thought their President was lying (before the evidence came out), they could see through the slime-ball. So, what do you think his favorability polls were saying at that time? One would think it couldn't be higher than 30% since 70% thought he was a liar. What do you think? His favorability was near 75%. That means at least half of America was supportive of a guy that they believed was lying right to their faces. That's when I got a cold chill down my spine as I realized that America was growing sick.

You know why they lie? It is because they can. And, more importantly many Americans love the lies - they really like the lies - they lie to themselves and they dig it when others lie to them. Sick as it may sound they simply like it - it tickles their fancy. Like that ol' Fleetwood Mac song says - "Tell me sweet lies..."

It is horribly true - Her lies will probably not make one iota of difference...

She'll recover...

While I prefer to lurk rather than post, this issue got me thinking and I would greatly appreciate your insight / reaction to my line of thinking.

Since the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 made falsifying military accolades more easily and stringently punished, shouldn't there be a similar law prohibiting individuals from falsifying acts of valor in their attempt to become Commander in Chief?!?

Senator Clinton’s lie here is absurd. And, as an individual whose life has been affected poignantly by very real sniper fire (as opposed to the type fabricated by Clinton for dramatic effect), I find this particular case of “misspeaking” to be of the most stomach-turning and angering variety. :(

The poser makes me ill.

You, sir, and folks like you should I think take particular offense. The military community among all others should feel a real pinch of outrage. Our freedom is constantly secured by folks genuinely going into harm's way. Clinton's attempt to pass herself off as some war zone hero is simply loathsome.

If you listen to the full tape on her brag-fest on dodging snipers; you'll hear Clinton say they would send the First Lady to places that were "too dangerous" for the President. She's saying that not only does she have the experience to be President, but as First Lady she actually was facing down bigger dangers. Totally ridiculous - Does she take us for complete idiots?

This woman as our Commander and Chief? What an awful joke.

People should not let her forget this lie. Veterans should ask her about this constantly - simply to express their outrage and let her twist in the wind - Let the world see a liar's face. This is the same woman that didn't want uniformed soldiers in the Whitehouse! People who support her are even worse. They are willing to have a liar lead them. We all have been subject to lliars and their lies, but to support a liar in his or her quest to lead us is simply among the lowest imaginable acts.

This woman is a liar of the worse kind.

So she says "millions of words a day"? Hmm, let's see... that was plural, so that's
a minimum of 2 million words per day. Even if she talked non-stop around the clock (imagine that nightmare) that would be over 23 words per second. Quite a pace, even for a someone as full of hot air as she is.

And think of the ecological ramifications of all that C02 being expelled. What is
the carbon footprint of her mouth at "millions of words a day"?

When I jumped into Panama I had to pull hard on the risers to avoid the sporatic gunfire from PDF troops that where on the terminal buildings roof. We had to low crawl with all our gear 100 meters across Toccumen airstrip because PDF patrols where on foot trying to find us. We finally made it to the terminal building where I personally had tea with Noriega and he agreed to give up and be taken into custody and transported back to the U.S. to face trial.

Oh, sorry, I "misremembered" I jumped into Panama in 1985 for JOTC training, during the day with 150 other 82nd jumpers. Geee, it's been a long week, and I speak like millions of words a day.

NOW BUNKO HILL IS UNDER FIRE

INSULTED MILITARY BLASTS HER SERIAL 'SNIPER' LIES

By GEOFF EARLE and CHARLES HURT, NY Post Correspondents
March 26, 2008

The prolonged battle between Obama and Clinton for the nomination boosts McCain's White House chances.

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton's lies about risking her life under sniper fire during a visit to Bosnia as first lady have infuriated the US military brass and troops. "She has no sense of what a statement like that does to soldiers," fumed retired Maj. Gen. Walter Stewart, the former head of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

"She is insulting the command in its entirety," he said yesterday. Clinton came under fire after saying she "misspoke" about what happened during the trip and claimed it was the first time she erred in describing her visit - an assertion Barack Obama's campaign quickly disproved by finding at least three prior occasions over the last few months where she's claimed there was sniper fire.

Stewart, who was assigned to the Army's European headquarters at the time of Clinton's visit in 1996, called her statements "really astonishing."

"Believe me, heads would have rolled all over" if the military put the then-first lady at "unacceptable risk," added Stewart, who is supporting Barack Obama. Air Force Lt. Gen. Buster Glosson, a John McCain supporter who ran the air attack in the first Gulf War, said, "It bothers me any time anyone running for the highest office in the land fabricates a story.

"That should bother any American, whether you're military or nonmilitary." Another source, a former Army analyst who was stationed abroad when dignitaries visited, said, "You know, we have soldiers overseas now who are getting shot at by real bullets from real enemies who really want to kill them. "Getting shot at by snipers is not something you forget - or make light of," he added.

We all are...

Same with Hillary. They're both terrible. They both have this in common - The Gov't can solve all problems - any problems. Big Brother is the answer for everything. Gov't solves our school problems, our banking problems, our healthcare problems, our environmental problems, our economic problems, our communities' problems, our racial problems...and...and...and...ad infinitum. To win among the Democrats you MUST be comfortable with lies and half-truths or you don't stand a chance. The Republicans aren't much better, but they are better. On second thought, when compared to the Dems they're a lot better.

The French philosopher DeTocqueville said America's Democracy would truly be in danger when the citizens resorted to voting themselves all the goodies from the national treasury - The people controlling the purse is Democracy's fatal conceit. It will probably kill us. What's scary is that we're getting close to that reality today - I'm not sure if the current system is sustainable for another 20 years like this. We're going to spend ourselves into the poor house. The democrats seem to be on a mission to kill us both morally and fiscally.

Liars and fools.

Already is a provision for that.

Do you want Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi in charge?
