That was the best part of training up at Popham Beach/lighthouse area when the 10th was at Devens.

Razor- that was cruel and unusual punishment - it's a hell of a drive up there (8+ hrs) from my current residence....

You're bringing back fond memories of a summer spent just down the road in Hallowell a few years back. If you get the chance, you should go fishing on the Kennebec, where there are still plenty of eagles to watch. :o

Alas, the tree-huggers convinced the state govt to mandate the removal of many of the old mill dams along the Kennebec. Nowadays, the mighty Kennebec would be more aptly described as Kenebec Brook. :(

On a side note, Hallowell's population has become more and more like Ogunquit, if that means anything to you. :eek:

We spent part of a day hanging out at Popham this trip. It was low tide, so the closer islands were a short walk away. Always a good time there, and you get to see the ships being built/refurbished at BIW on the way in/out.

I'll trade your 8 hour drive for my two-leg, 6 total hour flight...wait a minute, you're in Jersey...forget it! :p

I seem to recall a discussion on authentic Philly Cheesesteaks some time ago. What is it they say about payback...? :D

Thanks Razor - remind me I reside in the Industrial Waste Capitol of the US.. another great NJ tidbit - it's the only state in the Union that, for Insurance purposes, is considered 100% urban. Luckily I spend most of my weekends sailing on the Hudson in Upstate NY, or sailing on LI sound, with the occasional getaway to Asheville NC - another sidebar - I remember when we could actually train in the area where my parents now live (Arden, NC) and when the Echos had to be able to make commo from Baldy or Mitchell on their PHII FTX, in IMC. (FOG status confirmed, send the sales reps from the retirement communities in Asheville - hold it, make that the Outer Banks - I still want to sail.)

What we really need is a thread started on BBQ joints across the US (damn NJ has no BBQ), or really good Mex - TexMex joints (again lacking in NJ) - why do I live in this hell hole - oh, yeah, a decent job.

Do you ever get out to Las Vegas? I was TDY to Nellis and ate at one of the best BBQ places (not including my hometown of course) just outside the main gate. Memphis Championship Barbecue is the name IIRC. As far as Tex-Mex however, given where I was born and raised I can give you a list of about a hundred, but none of them are north of the Red River.

That's a cryin' shame. I remember being on a friend's boat, headed down river to chase striper, and making a big cast. Never saw the splash, though, and started to reel my line back in only to feel it grow progressively harder. Darned pelican had snatched my bait in mid-air and beat the heck out of me while I reeled it in the rest of the way and removed the hook. :D

Mi Charrito Ray in Fort Worth, TX is one my favorite - A Pollo Asado thar is killer, wit homemade Pic ode Gallo from fresh jalapeno's -same family has owned operated it since 72, I think.
And, there used to be a little taqueria just outside the 'zoo side' gate at Fort Sam, but I can't remember the name

The good places to eat are going away. Used to be great bbq in Portsmouth NH called AD's I believe. Now closed, may be a health food eatery now. Here in Washington County, the northeasternmost Mexican restaurant--La Sardina Loca in Eastport--got busted last week by the Feds for non-payment of taxes. Super lobster roll at the Crossroads Restaurant just up the street on RT1. If the lobster doesn't stand up 3 inches above the roll, you send it back.

I am NOT comparing this to what you can get in Maine, but since we are talking lobster sandwiches, there is a restaurant called The Farm in Beverly Hills that makes a fantastic Lobster Club. Lots of lobster with really thick bacon, funky greens and some sort of mayo sauce. Really worth a try if you're in the area. I think it's more than $13, though . . .

Actually, the Rainbow Grill has a pretty good lobster sandwich - but I think it goes for a LOT more than $13, I think a glass of watrer is $13 in that place.

I prefer fresh from the water, too bad I can't drop Lobster pots anymore - too far away from decent lobstering areas.

I love that place for brunch, now I have a reason to check it out during the week! :)

Heretic! Adding all that mess to a perfectly good lobster roll will get you burned at the stake by true Downeasters...if you're lucky. ;)

Did I mention live softshell was averaging $5/lb last week? :p

Cheaper than that if you dive for them yourself....

I don't get around to other places that serve BBQ here in Vegas, but Memphis is unbelievable!

I remember as a kid going down to the docks to catch crabs. If we took the boat out we would wait for dark and spotlight them but the best way to catch them quick is to check the sides of the docks. We would catch buckets full of Blue Claw and Softshell crabs.

Lobster will go well with a wide variety of beers but with something such as a lobster roll I would suggest a Kolsch or a lighter wheat beer, not a hefewiezen however as the phenolics (the medicinal, bandaid, metallic flavors) created by the yeast will just not work well in my opinion.

Rye (Roggen) beers would also be a good beer to try with the Lobster rolls.

You might also try a nice dry stout with the lobster roll. Guinness Draught, Murphy's, Goose Island Dublin Sout or Brooklyn Brewing Dry Stout are all very good examples of the style and all should be available on the East coast where Lobster Rolls are widely available.
