Yesterday, the guys at TSE showed me their little SAT antenna with their new little 50 watt amplifier. They were nailing the satellite every time. To measure the link margin, Ed had a 117F and was doing RSS tests. In order to get a score less than 100 he had to point the antenna in the opposite direction and lay it down almost on the ground. Very impressive.

Sat angle
 
In the States, is the satellite is at a low angle, almost on the horizon? If so, the amplifier is necessary here in the states but not overseas? If the satellite is at a high angle, you should be able to tag it with radio power alone. TSE comes up with great gadgets.
